When I placed a comment at @josediccus post, I made it know that the way at which we are so indulge to the norms and tradition of the land has kept us from advancing to some particular development. Having said so, you should understand that I don't in any way criticize the traditions that has been laid down before us. After all, most of these norms existed even before I was born. But the length at which one can be blinded by these laid down traditions is so alarming.
Okay, let me table it this way for greater clarity. Our fathers, forefathers to be precise, made mosts of the laws and customs that we see and behold today. And the theory or belief that the dead must be respected is one great yoke that has prevent a lot of society from advancing in the necessary areas. My article is basically directed to the Africans at the moment. The laid down rules, ways of life and all that, laid down by the ancestors were done to fit in order or made based on the understanding of their era. Time's changed and the norms should either advance along with it or be slotted out.
Only few of these rules have been responsibly adjusted and a new way of life kept in place. For example, there was a time when it was according to custom to kill twins immediately they are born. Also there is the customs that made up the popular saying that "A woman, no matter the education, will always end up in the kitchen". This is to say that no matter the level of education that a woman acquire, she will always be a house wife who is not allowed to work! Yea, you heard that right!
Incredible we see how many successful women we can find in our world today. Many of the inventories we see today are made from the ideas of a woman. Even we have lots of women as writers nowadays, even #Hive could testify to that. But there was once upon a time when this would have never been possible because of the theory and laws laid down by the ancestors with the hopes of maintaining a balanced society.
In Nigeria, some people still refrain from selling some particular things to someone during a specific time of the day. For example, I had once stepped out to buy a needle in the evening, precisely around 5pm and I was told that she (the owner of the shop) can't sell needles at that time of the day. To my greatest surprise, I asked why? And the response I got was, "Where I come from, (a particular state in the country) based on the customs laid down by our ancestors, needles is not allowed to be sold by this time of the day". After I got to hear such, I began asking myself if this particular lady is even advancing along with time, or is still stuck in the past.
There are many more things like that which I can point out. Things that shouldn't be a thing in this generation but are still being practiced by many, and in return, guides the actions and judgements of these people on some certain matters. So the question is, Where are the engineers? Cause it seems pretty clear that our beliefs are faulty.
While giving a comment under the post of a particular Hiver, I made mention of the fact that the backwardness we experienced due to the customs that we held on to which are clearly outdated and should be either modified or left out doesn't look like it's ending soon. So who are the engineers to fix these problems? The truth is, I HAVE NO IDEA.
If we say we are the engineers, I doubt we will be able to get things done before we are all consumed with the faulty engines ourselves. This doesn't mean that things can't be fixed by us. Life isn't perfect. But If we decide to get to adjust our ways of life based on the current time we find ourselves, it could take time. Lots of time and education. However, overdoing this could make things a lot more worse as we may end up building a lawless and less orderly community.
