They say indifference is power. There's a superior feeling that comes from not engaging within this common like-dislike polarity.
In most times, this is how we usually operate by default, that is we either like something and move towards it or we dislike it and try distancing ourselves from it.
Indifference, on the other hand, is when we neither like nor dislike something. The powerful-ness mostly lies in the ability to not be swayed by this default polarity. However, indifference isn't an absence of feeling per se, rather it is a kind of feeling with no voltage or charge to act behind it.
Limitations And Apathy
In Robert Greene's 48 Laws Of Power, indifference is covered in law 36, which states 'Disdain Things You Cannot Have: Ignoring Them Is The Best Revenge'.
Realistically, there are many things we can't have, simply because they're naturally beyond our reach. For example, certain physical limitations act as a ceiling on what we can and cannot do. And it is wise to heed these limitations rather than ignoring them, which often leads to so much pain and suffering.
Of course, this is coming from someone who has a natural disdain for limitations. I think limitations are life's way of keeping the undaring among us in check from venturing beyond their capabilities and potentially harming themselves.
Perhaps, it's more of a protective barrier, albeit an inconvenient one at times, that reminds us of the boundaries of our existence and encourages us to grow within them rather than beyond them.
But even outside of physical limitations, we all have desires that might be beyond our reach, whether it's a specific career path or a material possession. In such case, stubbornly clinging to these aspirations can lead to frustration and bitterness.
Indifference towards the unattainable empowers us to accept reality, redirect our energy towards achievable goals, and find fulfillment in the present moment.
So, on one hand, we have indifference towards the things we can't have, acting as a shield against potential disappointment, pain and suffering.
This indifference, however, can sometimes border on apathy, leading to a stagnant existence devoid of passion and striving. It usually happens when we use indifference as a crutch to avoid difficult situations or emotions.
On the other hand, we have indifference that stems from a place of neutrality, an objective assessment of the situation. This indifference acknowledges both the limitations and possibilities present, allowing for a more measured and strategic approach towards achieving a certain outcome or even just assessing a particular situation.
Neutral Indifference
Much of the power of indifference lies in the latter aspect and I think it's a good mental toolbox to acquire especially in today's world where we are constantly bombarded with opinions and expectations.
This neutral state empowers us to reclaim our mental space and make mindful choices that align with our true values. I think more importantly, it allows us to step back from this never ending chaos, observe everything with discernment, and actively engage with the world on our own terms, not on someone else's.
In essence, wearing a neutral lens to see the world more for what it is, is powerful.
