Who else had a blast with Duck Hunt? The old Nintendo light gun was so much fun and although that was not that many games that used it the ones that did worked well. Plus the a lot of the consoles game with both duck hunt and the gun so that was a huge bonus. But not ever accessory that comes out is a success. Some come with a lot of hype and excitement and then die out quickly when people realise it doesn't work as well as they though it was going to.
The Super Scope:
Having the success of the nintendo light gun is only made sense to follow up with a super version of the accessory. The Super Scope was bigger and had, as you can guess from the name of it, a scope. You had to rest the gun on your shoulder as it was quite big and might have been too big for a young audience. I never actually used on of these so I can't give it a review but I do remember it coming and going fast. The accessory came with a game called super scope 6 which was six games but none with the longevity of duck hunt. There was about a dozen games that were compatible with it but none took off, at least in the west.
I found a modern day review of it on youtube:
The Power Glove
I actually had this and man was it disappointing. They advertised it like it was the next big thing and how you could play punch-out with it. But all you ended up doing was flailing your arms around as little Mac took a beating. To put it simply it did not work. No matter how you punched or moved your arm there was little connection to the game. They gave you a bunch of movements you were suppose to use in the instructions but really they didn't help. And even if they did if it didn't match the in-game action was fun was that. It wasn't until the Wii came out that motion sensor started to work decently.
The Sega Activator
Just like the Power Glove the world was not ready for motion sensor accessories at this time. The activator was an octagon-shape object you put on the floor and stood in the middle of. Then you punched and kicked and the game was suppose to match what you did. I never had one but from how quickly people stopped talking about it it didn't work well. It was for fighting games but at the end of the day you are better off with a good old controller.
The Virtual Boy:
Now this is both an accessory and a console but since it was a full headset I'm going to include it in the the accessory category. The virtual boy was actually kind of cool when you tried it out but there was a LOT of red. In fact it was the only colour. The games were red and black and although the VR did work a lot of people did not want to stare at red for hours on end. There were stories of headaches and such and the system didn't last too long.
