An onion can make people cry but there's never been a vegetable that can make people laugh
Will Rogers
I'm shocked when some people complain when they see onions in their food, some would not even eat the food once they see onions in it while others will remove every slice of onions in the food as they eat. Onions may not be everyone's favorite but it's benefits cannot be underrated. Think of all the immeasurable benefits you are getting the next time you are about to prepare your meal and you want to slice onions and you start to shed tears. Tears act as a lubricant that kills bacteria in the eyes and also keep it in good condition. Our eyes may not function effectively if not for tears in our eyes.
If you weep a lot when cutting your onions you can try a trick that has been tested and effective. The trick is to freeze the onions for about 10 - 15 minutes before slicing. A frozen onion makes crying less during cutting.
Onions are rich in vitamins B and C, Sulphur, iron, potassium, manganese, fibers and also serves as antioxidants.
Some years back, I visited my uncle and his family. Each time my cousin wants to prepare meal its always a moment to think about how much she's going to cry. It seems she has a lot of tears in her eyes because the moment she slices the onion everywhere is filled with tears from her eyes. After a while when I noticed this I help her in cutting of onions. I shed tears too but not as bad as hers. It was even a fun thing to do for me. It was years later that I got to know that it is highly beneficial to my eyes.
Also, when I was growing up there is a neighbor of mine that does something that I couldn't try even till date. The young boy would eat raw onions and tomatoes. I see it as very disgusting, then. Even when I buy suya and it is garnished with fresh onions I'd not eat it, I prefer cabbage and cucumber tho. I know he must have been exposed to the health benefits of eating the onions and tomatoes raw as at that time.
