Welcome to Readers’ Week 2024, where we celebrate the thoughts and voices of our blooming community. This year, we invited our readers to share their thoughts on the theme “Clean Slate” as the academic year restarts - unfolding a tale of fresh starts, new beginnings and untold stories. From an array of incredible submissions, we’ve chosen the top seven, and as difficult as that was, these pieces best embody this powerful theme.
As we take you through these seven submissions, they bring to you their own interpretations. With that, we present to you the piece in the third position, which truly captures the essence of starting anew!
Wipe the slate clean
BY - @khushirustx

I thought it’d be easy
To have a fresh start.
To start all over,
To pull memories apart.
But even in new colors,
I saw tints of the past,
Shades of what didn’t happen,
Tones of what didn’t last.
I couldn’t paint a new picture,
Over impressions that you left,
The canvas only felt used,
While I still felt bereft.
I tried really hard,
To wash it all away,
But deep in each crevice,
Somehow you still stay.
I couldn’t wipe the notes
Of the melody you played,
Or the prints of your hand,
That just refuse to fade.
Even after what happened,
In spite of what you said,
I remember the jokes you made,
I remember the books we read.
I thought it’d be easy,
But how wrong had I been.
No soap, not rain,
And no gut-wrenching pain,
Could wipe this slate clean.
