You’ve probably heard of Bovaer, a feed additive made by DSM-Firmenich that reduces methane from cow burps. Big companies like Arla, Valio, FrieslandCampina, Grosvenor Farms (for Tesco), and even JBS are using it. The idea is that it helps dairy farms lower their greenhouse gas emissions.
But is Bill Gates' solution of stopping cow burps the answer to climate change?
Maybe, but I’m not fully convinced. We’re still relying on industrial farming and covering up the harm with feed additives.

That’s why I’ve decided to stop supporting companies that use Bovaer and reduce my milk consumption.
Instead, I’ve started supporting local dairies that don’t use it. I called around to some small dairy companies, asked if they use Bovaer, and found a few that are more ethical, so I stick with them.

I enjoy having my milk delivered to my doorstep once a week, rather than driving to the shop, which also reduces gas emissions.
I’m also cutting back on how much milk I use in general. Less demand means less pressure on cows and the environment.
Tech can help, but real change starts with using less and supporting the right businesses.
