Several deadly pestilence have spread due to a negligence on our path regarding the cleanliness of our environment.
Much as I cannot keep my whole town clean, I often try as much as possible to keep my immediate surroundings clean and avoid the spread of dirt.
For my outdoor cleanliness, dropping papers and food wraps around often littering the environment is prohibited to me and everyone around me. Everyone around must learn and be conscious of using the waste bin at all times, including the children.
Since even a single banana peel can distort the appearance of a place, the worst that can happen is how this can also cause an accident. Banana peels on the ground, especially on the tiles, can cause humans to slip and fall; it is one of the dangerous habits I am very mindful of.
Also, be fully aware that whenever there is rainfall, the environmental litter and plastic bottles we have dropped often block the gutters, causing erosion. They all get deposited in our water bodies to cause pollution. I realized how that simple and poor habit can cause so much harm, aside from keeping my surroundings unclean. I made it a point of duty to practice proper disposal of dirt.
Another activity I do outdoors is to keep the environment clean and free of grasses as well. Since I moved into my apartment, I have seen some snakes around the compound a couple of times. Snakes and scorpions are not so far away; hence, keeping the place clean from grass will protect me from them. Every effort to kill these animals proved abortive, but a clean and grass-free environment can notify me of their presence whenever they come out of their hiding.
For indoor cleanliness, there are basic chores I make sure are carried out daily. Washing the dishes and keeping a clean kitchen and toilet is of top priority.
It is a poor habit to leave unwashed dishes in the kitchen. As a microbiologist, I know fully well that it is a breeding ground for microorganisms that cause diseases; hence, I try to clean up every dish as soon as they are used.
Keeping an insecticide has been of help for me. I hate cockroaches, especially those that will creep into our food unaware; houseflies and every other insect vector that spreads disease are often controlled. This gives me some form of assurance and peace that every meal eaten from my kitchen is healthy and safe. It is possible to eat some meals and begin to have diarrhea afterwards; such illness often comes from not properly cooked meals or a dirty environment.
Aside from the daily house chores and tasks, other activities are done on a weekly basis, talking about laundry or mopping the floor. I have to wash and clean the bedspread and keep the room in order at all times. Items not kept properly can cause domestic accidents; meanwhile, a disorganized room doesn't help me to think straight. When things are out in their proper places, ideas and inspiration for different tasks flow easily.
These are the measures and steps I take to keep a clean and healthy environment.
