In this video I explain why you can't just scrap an air conditioner. There are steps you have to go through to be sure that you aren't releasing CFC and HCFC refrigerants into the atmosphere. There are very hefty fines and it is very harmful to the ozone layer and your health in general. I have been told that even using a respirator will do little to prevent adverse health effects.
