I came up to write a series of posts in which I explain a story behind a plant I grow this year.
The first one is "miniature red/yellow bell". I have red and yellow but there is also chocolate colored one. They are an American heirloom bell pepper that was introduced to Seed Savers Exchange by Lucina Cress. She got the seeds from her neighbor. This pepper is freshly eaten while its pickles are popular too.

As the bell pepper plant grow up to 50cm and the small fruit mature quickly, I thought it is ideal for family with young kids. I'll distribute some of the plants I'm growing as a part of my food education project. They can be grown in garden, on balcony, sunny window sill etc. Moreover kids can learn to take seed for next year, which is a great thing about heirloom spices.
I sowed the seeds in a tray and moved the germinated ones to cells in February. They are now in pots. I keep two plants from each color for my daughter and me to see how it grows and take seeds :)

今年は結構変わったものを育てていて、今育てている植物を紹介していくことにしました。
初回は「Miniature Red/Yellow Bell」というアメリカのエアルームのミニパプリカについて書くことにしました。このパプリカは、Lucina CressさんがSeed Savers Exchangeという種の保存や交換、販売を行う非営利団体に紹介して広まった品種です。Lucinaさんは近所のおばあちゃんから種をもらったとのこと。私は赤と黄色だけ育てていますが、チョコレート色のものもあります。キャベツなどを詰めてピクルスにした様子がかわいらしいのもこのパプリカ広まったきっかけだと思います。

ぱっと調べて見た感じでは、種を扱っている日本の種屋さんは見つからず。。ミニパプリカは多分他にも品種があると思うのですが、これはエアルームなので種取りして来年も育てられるのがいいところなんですよね。
私がなぜこのパプリカを育てているかというと、食育プロジェクトのためです。育っても草丈は50cmほどでかつ早熟なので、庭がないおうちでも育てられて、子どもたちも早く収穫が楽しめていいかなと思って種を購入しました。赤・黄色それぞれ2株ずつうちに残して私も子どもと楽しみます。
春夏の園芸シーズンが始まりますね！
