There’s a coconut tree in front of my house that has been there for almost 8 years now. It was planted and watered when needed, and given its space from the outside, it looks healthy enough. Its leaves are green, long, and waving beautifully when the wind blows. At a glance, you might even admire it for how fresh and strong it appears, but there's something unusual, something that has kept me wondering.
For all these years, this coconut tree has refused to bear fruit. Not even once. No coconut has ever grown from it. It just stands tall, green, and fruitless.
What makes it more confusing is that the tree doesn't look sick. There’s no sign of dryness. In fact, the leaves are always looking fresh and full of life, which normally would be a sign that the tree is doing well. But somehow, even with all the signs of health, there’s no coconut to show for it, not even the smallest beginning of one.
I sometimes look at it and think, is it just for decoration? Because if you judge it by its look alone, you'd say it's doing fine to some extend,But in reality, it’s not giving what it's meant to give. It's like someone who appears to be doing well on the outside but isn’t really making any progress.
What makes it harder to understand is that others who planted their own coconut trees around the same time as we did are already enjoying the fruits. They’ve harvested, drank from the coconuts, and even replanted new ones from the seeds. Meanwhile, ours just remains there, growing leaves and taking space
I’ve tried to ignore it, hoping that maybe one day it will surprise us. Cause, I know it looks better than before, But year after year, it's still the same, no change, no fruit, just leaves and for some reasons, we've practically given up on the tree, it's now meant for decoration in the house
Now, I’ve begun to wonder, what could really be the cause?
Is it the type of coconut that was planted?
Could it be the soil in that area of the compound?
Is it possible that the environment or weather here doesn’t support coconut fruiting?
Or maybe some trees just never produce at all?
If you’ve ever seen or heard of anything like this, please feel free to share your thoughts. Maybe there’s something I’m missing. Maybe there's something I can still do to help it. All I know is, after almost 8 years of growing leaves, I’m still waiting for that first coconut.
