Hello Hivers✌✌
Water the say is life and so it is for the Fishes.
For humans clean water is Clean water but for fish Fingerlings, other factors has to be considered like ;
- Water Temperature
- Water pH.
Water pH is a very important factor that we need to pay apt attention to.
Water pH affect the hatching process of the fish Fingerlings and also their growth.
The ideal water pH for Fingerlings and Fry's is around pH 6.3- 7.2.
There are several things that can be used to buffer the pH of the water such as sodium.bicarbonate.
But for this project sodium.bicarbonate will not be used because of some concerns that it hinders growth of Fingerlings.
So we will use oyster shell for Buffering our water pH.
Oyster shell gives the water pH an initial huge boost; even after being well washed. After the initial boost ( even a small amount can send pH into 6.-7) it will stop the rapid dissolution and the remaining shell will not have a noticeable effect on the pH after water changes or aging of the water ..
Next we will start the preparation of the shells for Buffering..
First we will need to
- wash the shells with salts to sterilize it from every other contaminants.
- Burning the shells so it can easily start its work in the water..
- Crushing the the shells.
Then washing it again with salt water. - Bagging it and introducing into the overhead tank.
The initial reading on the pH meter before introducing the shells to the water was 4.8 which is acidic for the Fingerlings
Few hours after introducing the shells to the overhead tank the pH reading was 6.0 which is close to neutral and very adequate for fish Fingerlings.
