Often considered a negative thing, ego is something everyone has. We all actually have essentially the same amount of ego. So what does it mean when you say, “A blow to your ego” or an “inflated ego?”
The ‘Urban Dictionary’ says an inflated ego is when someone is very confident to the point of overconfidence-or in my words, illogically high confidence. Think of the skinny white rapper walking, alone up to the big guy on campus, throwing epithets and fighting words…the dude’s confident…but over-confident…
A deflated ego, or a ‘blow to the ego’ is when someone did not live up to their own ideals/goals. From my experience, it seems like this idiom is attributed to people who are feeling depressed or down on their luck. Essentially…the real you is not the self-perception of you.
I have found that when people say, “Don’t let it get to your head,” it is usually right after a compliment for something I was able to accomplish, something that was not easy by the standards of the person judging. I find this interesting. On the one hand, they’re complimenting for a job well done while slapping me in the face with the other hand to say, “My congratulations really isn’t that important.”
I’m confident…probably more than most…no, definitely more than most. I know something that sets me apart from a lot of folks in this world, is action. I do stuff. I have 9 YouTube channels, have bought and sold many properties, learned multiple languages, etc. At one point, I was building a house, working full time, driving for 2 ride share services, going to school at 2x the full time pace (60 credit hours in 12 months compared to a full time student at 30 hours in a year), and taking care of my family of 5 kids and a wife all at the same time. I do stuff, and I meant it when I said it. I know what I’m capable of. I have a really good idea of what I’m not capable of. This means my ego is secure. My self-confidence is set. I have gotten to the point where other people’s opinion of me is worth very little, because I have already gone through self-discovery, and I know that I’ve known me much longer than anyone else has known me.
What am I getting to? Ego is like art-it is in the eye of the beholder.
I know some who would say I have an inflated ego because they see me as overconfident, probably because they don’t think they can accomplish what they perceive me telling them that I’m able to accomplish.
Some may say I’ve had a blow to my ego because I have not reached all the goals I wanted to reach. Believe me, after 5 foreclosures and years of doing YouTube without being the rich white boy in the Cayman’s, some people will think I’m down on my luck…nope…I’m happy right where I am and everything is on the upward trend. It took me 8 years to get debt free, but I’m seeing an escalation in what I value every day, monetary and not!
I just am…that’s my ego…and that’s yours. Your ego is you, who you are/how you see yourself. It is neither low nor high, it just is. Think of it as a persona. Don’t let others dictate how you see yourself. If you’re feeling gloomy, do something you’re good at. If you’re feeling skyward, keep doing what you’re doing (as long as you’re not on drugs hahaha). Something’s right…but latch on to truth. It’ll take you further, self-respectfully, than anything else.
Now "follow me" and go blow someone else’s ego up 😊 LOL
