Entropy is a bit of a buzzword in modern science. It is often associated with "disorderliness". Even though it's much more interesting than this, I'll focus my article on the disorderliness in communication between two people i.e the entropy in communication. Before I dive in into this properly, here is how entropy came about;
The first hint of entropy was given by Lazare Carnot. He was notable for his work studying engines and leading the French revolutionary armies. He was more interested in the work put into a system than the work that comes out of it and he called the output "useful work" and named the lost work "transformation energy" which became entropy in the later run.
The word "Entropy" is used in various fields of study and is used unrelated to another and that's exactly what I'll be doing, crafting my own meaning of entropy to fit the aspect of communication. Just like Lazare Carnot would fit his work into useful and transforming, I'll try to fit the word Entropy in the area of disorderliness in communication. The bridge in communication and the disorderliness that can result if communication is altered in the process of transferring it. Does entropy fit here? Not sure but disorder can happen anywhere.
Ten people were lined up separated some meters from each other. A message was whispered to the first person and he was asked to tell the same message to the next person while it continued in that sequence. Before it got to the tenth person, the initial message that was given changed entirely and the last person couldn't even understand the message that was given to him. The output of a communication is often based on the effectiveness of the medium to which it was communicated and the comprehensive level of the receiver. If there's a disorder in any of these, then the output may be incongruous. An individual can pass misleading information if there was an entropy in how it was passed.
Five people can read a text and have five different meanings to it. Only the writer has a true interpretation of it. So many things influence a communication just as entropy is either influenced by an external force or whether it's high or low. Our environment, exposure, culture, belief,etc. are things that can influence the way we comprehend information.
Entropy might have been discussed only in science and in laws of thermodynamics but it can be applicable to every area of life, like I just did.
