We visited Castleton, a lovely village popular for its caverns, shops, Christmas lights and the ancient Peveril Castle amongst other things. The ruins of the castle lay on top of a steep hill. You can pay to go and see it but unfortunately, the route to the top is closed until March. I will have to leave that for another time.
We went to the entrance of the
the 'Devil’s Arse’ cavern. According to locals, it was nicknamed this because of the farting sounds that came within the cavern when flood water drained away!
In the late 1800s, they changed its name to 'Peak Cavern’ when Queen Victoria visited because they didn't want to offend her. Spoil sports! In the early 1900s, a group of rope makers actually lived in houses just inside the entrance to the natural cavern.
The cavern is also venue to numerous concerts. The acoustics must be something else.
There's some lovely houses and cottages in the village. I've visited in December and it looks lovely when the Christmas lights are on, especially when it snows.
Peakshole Water is the stream that flows through the village.
It was a quaint little place to walk around, but it was so cold we didn’t hang about for too long. We will probably revisit in the summer and explore more.
