Yesterday I went to an old friend's house and there was also his 4 year old daughter. He ended the marriage a few months ago and, after a court dispute, got the right to stay with his daughter Clarice a few days a month. Clarice is a special child, she has a small degree of autism. There is no trace of the anomaly in her physiognomy, however, from an early age her parents noticed that she did not socialize very well with people, so 2 years ago she was diagnosed with autism.
My fiancee and I have frequented this friend's house since Clarice was a newborn. We witnessed the difficulty she had to relate to people, especially those she was not in constant contact with, in addition to any child. Once diagnosed with the syndrome, a treatment was quickly started so that her chances of having an ordinary adult life were real. So, after a few months without seeing her, I saw her yesterday and I was startled by the ABSURD progress she had made. Thanks to God and to the treatment, she evolved a lot in several aspects, mainly in the interpersonal relationship, and that made me extremely satisfied. After 4 years of trying to attract this child's attention, looking for a way to make her improve her social life, yesterday was the first time she came to me on her own initiative and spent hours playing and interacting in her own way.
It is true that this event made me happy, however, it was an idea extracted from a conversation with her father that motivated me to write this reflection. At first I was surprised by the knowledge he had acquired about Clarice's clinical condition. He knew how to explain exactly what was being done to achieve the progress that was noticed by me, at the same time he was thrilled to see her interacting with someone she doesn't see every day. Finally, he told me a phrase he had read in a book that made me reflect: "Autistic people have much more to teach us about the purity and sincerity of their actions than we teach them about social behavior." What a beautiful teaching I got in this short period...

Aprendendo com a pureza dos autistas.
Na data de ontem fui à casa de um velho amigo e lá também estava sua filha de 4 anos. Ele terminou o casamento há poucos meses e, depois de uma disputa judicial, conseguiu o direito de ficar com sua filha Clarice alguns dias no mês. Clarice é uma criança especial, tem um pequeno grau de autismo. Não há qualquer traço da anomalia em sua fisionomia, todavia, desde bem pequena os pais perceberam que ela não se socializava muito bem com as pessoas, assim, há 2 anos, ela foi diagnosticada com autismo.
Eu e minha noiva frequentamos a casa desse meu amigo desde que a Clarice era recém-nascida. Presenciamos a dificuldade que ela tinha para se relacionar com as pessoas, em especial as que ela não tinha contato constantemente, além de qualquer criança.
Depois de diagnosticada com a síndrome, rapidamente iniciou-se um tratamento para que as chances dela ter uma vida adulta comum fossem reais. Então, após alguns meses sem vê-la, eu a vi ontem e fiquei assustado com o progresso ABSURDO que ela teve. Graças a Deus e ao tratamento, ela evoluiu muito em diversos aspectos, principalmente no relacionamento interpessoal, e isso me deixou extremamente satisfeito. Depois de 4 anos tentando atrair a atenção dessa criança, procurando uma forma de fazê-la melhorar seu convívio social, ontem foi a primeira vez que por iniciativa própria ela veio até mim e ficou horas brincando e interagindo a sua maneira.
É verdade que esse acontecimento me deixou feliz, contudo, foi uma ideia extraída de uma conversa com o pai dela que me motivou a escrever essa reflexão. Primeiramente me surpreendi com o conhecimento que ele havia adquirido acerca da condição clínica da Clarice. Ele sabia explicar exatamente o que estava sendo feito para alcançar o progresso que foi percebido por mim, ao mesmo tempo em que se emocionava por vê-la interagindo com alguém que ela não vê todos os dias. Por fim, ele me disse uma frase que havia lido em algum livro que me fez refletir: “os autistas têm muito mais a nos ensinar sobre a pureza e a sinceridade dos seus atos, do que nós a eles sobre comportamento social”. Que belo ensinamento eu obtive nesse pequeno período...
