On earth the protective layer of ozone, at the top of our planet, is created in a similar way, sodium potassium and water vapor have also been found, confirming that the James Webb instruments have the capacity to perform the wide range of investigations in the atmosphere of exoplanets.
To view the light from WASP-39 b, Webb tracked the planet's path in front of its star, allowing some of the star's light to filter through the planet's atmosphere, the different types of chemicals in the atmosphere absorb different colors of the starlight spectrum, so the missing colors tell astronomers which molecules are present.
By observing the universe in infrared light, the web can detect chemical fingerprints that cannot be detected in visible light, now it has done so with a gas giant, but the James web is expected to sharpen its aim to probe the atmospheres of planets more small, rocky planets similar to Earth, such as those that exist in the TRAPPIST-1 system.
