Early to bed and early to rise has become such a cliche. It's one of those lines I started hearing from my days in the nursery. I still hear it today and I have to say that despite knowing the importance of good sleep, that line has never been music to my ear.
When did things change?
A big part of my unconventional sleeping pattern started from the years I spent in boarding school. I was 10 when I started living in boarding school and we usually have lights-out by 10 pm for junior students and 11 pm for senior students.
Whenever we hear the bell for lights-out, we are expected to leave our night classes and go to our hostels within the next 10 minutes. It marks the end of all activities for the day with the next stuff being to embrace our bed till we hear the rising bell by 4:30. It's usually hard to cope with the series of activities piled up for each day so, being awake after lights-out was one of the ways we used to prepare ahead for the next day.
Things like ironing your uniform with charcoal iron, polishing your sandals, preparing your prayer books and also arranging your cutleries for morning refectory. We also secured a bucket of water and have it chained under our bunk bed. All to beat time the next day and avoid being late to the assembly ground which starts by 6:15 am.
The pattern continued after boarding days
Funny enough, even when I left boarding school, going to bed any time before 00:30 became an impossible thing for me. I can at least try, and I have tried on several occasions, but what's the point where there is always something to be done?
Nonetheless, I can attest to the fact that being sleep deprived is not a good thing. It clouds people's sense of justice and makes them lose their minds. It can lead to more complications in the future. So, if you are one of those that deprive yourself of good sleep, you might want to rethink that decision.
My perspective about moderate sleeping duration.
Sadly, I can't place this in figures. I've heard that 7 - 8 hours of sleep per day is good for people. It has also been said that anyone that sleeps for more than 5 hours a day is wasting his life. Haha. Isn't that a bunch of complicated perspectives?
I'm sure you must have seen and heard of such point of view. When you listen to different motivational speakers or get to read about the lifestyle of many successful people, you will understand just how this thing is.
For that reason, I have to say that the idea of good sleep boils down to individuals. It's different strokes for different folks. What works for Mr A may not work for Mr B
This is the best time to chip in the phrase “Man know thyself“ by Socrates. Try to understand what works for you when it comes to the number of hours you need to spend sleeping per day.
As far as it works for you and you don't end up looking like a zombie the next day, you can go for it.
That's it people. How many hours of sleep do you get per day?
