Do I even have a point ?
I have been blogging now since about 1996… From the minute I bought my 1st Compaq computer, signed up for Erols Dial-up internet service and learned html to create my own web site … I soon realized that I preferred the daily web log format and quickly turned my web site into a “blog”.
Most of those website logs have long since disappeared. Moving from host to host, as web hosting fees increased year after year. Letting my OffgridLife URL go back up for sale on Godaddy …. Eventually moving to blogger… and having those blogs shut down by Google for what ??? … fine. I let most of my blogger blogs go and moved to Facebook. Eventually building the “Living off the Grid” Private group to over 100,000 members, before finally landing on Steemit as @offgridlife
A blockchain web log of my daily activities, my photography, my art work, my travels, my journey to live off the grid.
Since 1997…. “OffgridLife” Am I there yet ? Am I living off the grid ?
Nope.
As I searched for that perfect piece (peace) of Land and studied the technology required to live off the grid I soon realized I would need a lot of solar panels, a lot of very expensive batteries, a lot of fossil fuels, generators, a lot of firewood, a lot of livestock, a large vehicle to haul stuff to live off the grid. Also, given our long winters Canada was not the best place to live off the grid.
I decided I liked Canada, I love our long winters, I want to be able to ride my bike or ski to get my groceries, I’d rather not own a car, except for camping trips, I didn’t want to cut down all the trees for firewood, and I certainly did not want to be tied to an electrical system that required a gas guzzling generator to keep my deep cell batteries charged to 80 % …
So I decided to just find a place along the river and reduce my energy consumption.
I guess OffgridLife is an ideal that I will never achieve ….
Kind of like calling my blog “Utopia” or something like that. Paradise Found…. But not yet paradise.
The biggest criticism of my “Living off the Grid” Group on Facebook is that it is a Contradiction to be off the grid and connected with 100,000 or a Million people on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram etc…
If you were truly off the grid you would not be online, you would not have Internet…. You would be living far from civilization and we would never hear from you. Ok fine. The Group was created so that we could learn about Living off the grid from people living off the grid, who were still somehow connected to the World via wifi or satellite internet. I suggested to these 100,000 people that they could probably earn some extra income on Steemit or Hive sharing their stories and knowledge…. Only 1 person ever joined.
The rest told me to stop spamming my own Facebook Group. Lol
These bitcoin crypto blogging blockchain sites are all a scam.
Fine. That was the end of that.
So my blog is a Contradiction. I’m stuck with the name and I don’t want to create another blog.
This is it. I’m here on the grid blogging about mostly anything except living off the grid.
Maybe someday … very soon, I will retire and I will move to my little piece of land on Lake Superior and go completely off the grid.
Then you won’t hear from me again.
Because I’ll be off the grid.
