A couple of days ago, for the hundredth time my car broke down in the middle of town. I'm really tired of spending money on this car and always seeing a new hurdle that not only takes my mind off it, but takes money out of me. I had gone to the gym early with him, currently the mornings here in southern Brazil are pretty cold, that day it was no more than 4 degrees. In a moment of stress and anger about the situation and the stupid car that constantly breaks down, I decided to make a proposal to my friend @caroline.muller and buy from her the bike I had sold her about a year ago. I literally left the car in the city center parking lot and walked to get my bike. After inflating her tires and sitting down to pedal it was like I was reconnecting with something that had been dormant for a few years. I used to ride my bike frequently, in fact, daily, and when I bought my first car, it was as if the bicycle had lost its importance, even though at the time it was not as fundamental as the vehicle is now (because I need to take and pick up my daughter, go out with my girlfriend, help my mother with shopping, etc.), but I remember well that little by little the bike lost space. And now, on those first cold morning rides, I felt, in the wind that was burning in my face, a unique sensation returning, a very specific kind of "freedom", which only a bicycle gives.
I re-learned to ride a bike at the age of 20. I say that I re-learned why before that I kept my distance from any bicycle, since I was about 6 or 7 years old and I simply created trauma by the vehicle. It was only in my youth that I reconsidered it as something that made sense. I literally started to see the idea of pedaling as a tool of life. By understanding that with it I could go much further without needing a ride, I would do everything faster, I would be less tiring than walking, and besides I would have a great physical exercise, I realized that I needed to get a bike and learn to walk. And in a very Thomas way, I did it. I bought the first used bicycle from an ex-girlfriend's father. I remember it well because it was a cold morning like this when the car broke down, that I decided to wake up earlier than everyone else, take the bike and push it for a long time until I went on a dirt road in the inner city (my city has rural paths very close to the center, because it's a very small town) , and when he was finally alone on a silent road, full of fog, no cars passing by, I climbed it for the first time. Affirming to myself that I wouldn't fall, that I have adult legs and that I just stretch them and I'm already on the ground. In a few minutes I understood the mechanics of the movement and finally, after all these years I finally felt the joy of that wind on my face, the powerful feeling of forcing your thighs to pedal harder and harder and feeling yourself going forward cutting through the fog. My smile on my face was explicit and I could only keep going and going forward, after all, now I knew how to ride a bike.
There were many years of passion for cycling, doing countless trails through the interior of the city, taking long journeys, carrying fruit and water in your backpack, cycling on cold and hot days, day and night, with friends or alone. The bicycle was definitely my vehicle. And that ended up being pushed aside with the arrival of other obligations and needs, for convenience and comfort (because sometimes, you know, there's nothing better than just sitting in your car comfortably and driving effortlessly). But now is the time for me to find this middle way, knowing how to choose the car only when it's really urgent, and at all times, use the bike, always remembering that I'm not only strengthening my breathing, my legs and my physique in general as well as I'm experiencing an experience much richer in detail passing through the city feeling the world less isolated than I would be in the car. It's just a headset, hydrate yourself, and ride.

Há uns dois dias atrás, pela centésima vez meu carro deu problema, no meio da cidade. Eu estou realmente cansado de gastar dinheiro nesse caro e sempre ver surgir um novo empecilho que além de me tirar a calma, me tira dinheiro. Eu havia ido para a academia cedo com ele, atualmente as manhãs aqui no sul do Brasil estão bem frias, nesse dia não passava de 4 graus. Num momento de estresse e raiva da situação e do carro estúpido que quebra constantemente, resolvi fazer uma proposta para a amiga @caroline.muller e comprar dela a bicicleta que havia lhe vendido há mais ou menos um ano. Eu literalmente larguei o carro no estacionamento do centro da cidade e fui a pé buscar a bicicleta. Depois de encher os pneus dela e sentar para pedalar foi como se eu estivesse me reconectando com algo que estava dormente há alguns anos. Eu andava de bicicleta frequentemente, aliás, diariamente, e quando comprei meu primeiro carro, foi como se a bicicleta tivesse perdido importância, mesmo que na época não era tão fundamental como é agora o veículo (por que preciso levar e buscar minha filha, sair com a namorada, ajudar minha mãe com compras, etc), mas lembro bem que pouco a pouco a bicicleta foi perdendo espaço. E agora, naquelas primeiras pedaladas da manhã fria, eu sentia junto ao vento que batia ardido em meu rosto, uma sensação única voltando, uma espécie de "liberdade" muito específica, que só a bicicleta dá.
Eu re-aprendi a andar de bicicleta aos 20 anos de idade. Digo que re-aprendi por que antes disso eu mantinha distância de qualquer bicicleta, desde que tinha uns 6 ou 7 anos e simplesmente criei um trauma pelo veículo. Foi só já na juventude que reconsiderei-a como algo que fazia sentido. Comecei a ver literalmente a ideia de pedalar como uma ferramenta de vida. Ao compreender que com ela eu poderia ir muito mais longe sem precisar de caronas, faria tudo mais rápido, cansaria menos do que andando a pé, e além disso faria um ótimo exercício físico, eu percebi que eu precisava arranjar uma bicicleta e aprender a andar. E de um jeito muito Thomas, eu fiz isso. Comprei a primeira bicicleta usada do pai de uma ex-namorada. Eu lembro bem, pois era uma manhã fria como essa em que o carro quebrou, que eu decidi acordar mais cedo que todo mundo, pegar a bike e ir empurrando ela por muito tempo até ir em uma estrada de terra do interior da cidade (minha cidade tem caminhos rurais bem próximos do centro, por que é uma cidade bem pequena), e quando estava enfim sozinho numa estrada silenciosa, cheia de neblina, nenhum carro passando, eu subi nela pela primeira vez. Afirmando para mim mesmo que não iria cair, que eu tenho pernas adultas e que é só esticar elas e já alcanço o chão. Em poucos minutos eu havia compreendido a mecânica do movimento e enfim, depois de todos esses anos finalmente eu sentia a alegria daquele vento na face, a sensação vigorosa de forçar as coxas para pedalar cada vez mais e mais forte e sentir-se indo para a frente cortando a neblina. Meu sorriso na cara era explícito e eu só conseguia seguir indo e indo para frente, afinal, agora eu sabia pedalar.
Foram muitos anos de paixão pela pedalada, fazendo inúmeras trilhas pelos interiores da cidade, fazendo trajetos longos, levando frutas e água na mochila, pedalando em dias frios e dias quentes, de dia e de noite, com amigos ou sozinho. A bicicleta era definitivamente meu veículo. E isso acabou sendo deixado de lado com a chegada de outras obrigações e necessidades, por comodidade e conforto (por que as vezes, vocês sabem, não tem nada melhor do que só sentar no seu carro confortavelmente e dirigir sem esforço). Mas agora é a hora de eu encontrar esse caminho do meio, saber optar pelo carro só quando realmente urgente, e em todo o resto do tempo, usar a bicicleta, lembrando sempre que não só estou fortalecendo minha respiração, minhas pernas e meu físico de forma geral como também estou vivenciando uma experiência muito mais rica em detalhes passando pela cidade toda sentindo o mundo menos isolado do que estaria no carro. É só por um fone de ouvido, se hidratar, e pedalar.
