In my country, the rate at which internet fraud has increased is alarming and scary, particularly in the area where I grew up. Internet fraud has become the order of the day, and the intention of every young male you see is to become a yahoo boy or a G-boy, as most of them like to be called.
There are some towns whose economy is dependent on the Yahoo boys, order wise known as internet fraud stars.
These boys look for rich women and men looking for relationships on the internet, and they pose themselves as someone else and start chatting with these men and women until they are able to create a scenario that will make those people send them money, and once they get that money, they block such people and move on to the next available victim.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) tries to close down the activities of the boys, but the more they try, the more the boys create means through which they can scam.
From hacking people's social media to creating malware links through which they get user information, which they use to scam others
I was a victim of one such in which a website was built. They told us they would pay a token to register, which I did since I was looking for some extra sources of income. After we registered, they told us we would have to do tasks on the website, and for each of those tasks, you get rewards, so we kept at it, and on the time we were supposed to be paid, the website suddenly stipend worked. This was the first experience of internet fraud.
Amazing how I have heard of people getting me hacked on their WhatsApp, and these hackers are using these people's information to send messages to their loved ones. I'm collecting money from them, so on this faithful day I got a message from someone who happened to be a member of a WhatsApp growth platform that I was on in my school.
The person told me that there was going to be a meeting, and she told me that he was going to call me to give me a code, which I was going to use as the login to enter the meeting since he was from the growth platform that I was on. I didn't have any suspicions.
While on the call, a code dropped into my phone, and then he asked for the code, and suddenly I saw a message pop up from that platform saying that somebody had a message, then telling them that a code would be sent to them for them to access the meeting, and then the leader of the platform told us that it was a scam, and at this point the code had been sent to me, and I already called it out loud to my caller.
I soon realized that after I called the code, I received a notification that I've been logged out of my WhatsApp, so I was still on the call, and the guy was asking for a code that does a code I entered, then I was registering my WhatsApp and he needs that code, so I ended the call. As soon as I ended the call, I tried to login to my WhatsApp, and they ask for my two factor authentication code, which I provided.
I was back in, so the guy called again. I was still asking for the code. I got angry, and I really insulted him before he ended the call, and he never called back again.
If I hadn't done my two-factor authentication, I would have ended up being hacked on that faithful day, so if you haven't done your two-factor authentication and any of your social media platforms, please go ahead and do so.
So recently, a friend of my sister was hacked, and the person sent a message to my sister telling her that they needed some amount of money, and after my sister sent the money, she called later to say what happened.
So do all you can to make sure you verify links and sources on the internet because these guys are everywhere, like the devil seeking someone to devour.
