To me, I believe it's fine to have a smart phone if you want to learn how to use it to make yourself productive than to show it off to friends when you don't know the functionality of it.
I started my tech journey on my smart phone, it was a rough one but I learnt a lot of things, this knowledge helped me when I got my laptop, it made it easy for me to navigate through all the platforms and companies I work for.
