Coffee I'm Currently Drinking
Before the pandemic began, I'd say I spent about 50% of my awake time in cafes. Since I worked from "home" before it was cool/mandatory, I had a bit of freedom where I could actually be working from. Even though I get easily distracted and require a certain level of quiet (or white noise) to work, I was willing to pay that price for access to good coffee.
I am lucky in that we have quite a few good coffee shops/cafes in my neighbourhood. No I don't live in Amsterdam :). Anyhow I only drink black coffee with absolutely nothing added, so it's even more important that the coffee itself is great since it can't be disguised by sugar, milk, chocolate or whatever else.
Nowadays my living room is my cafe. I get the peace and quiet I want without the temptation to go out, or the FOMO I used to get when working actually from home. I also have to make my own coffee which, I have to admit, has never been as good as at the cafes.
I have basically had all the coffees available at the supermarket. I don't mean instant coffee like that Nescafe stuff. I don't think I can actually drink that stuff anymore without spitting it straight out. The last time I had it was on a flight somewhere and that was all they had. I could taste the individual chemicals in there. Terrible.
Since I've been doing most of my shopping online like many of you, I've been buying coffee from websites including amazon. I've tried a few good ones I found, but I have recently settled on this brand.
CAFE DIRECT makes a whole bunch of flavours of coffee with beans originating from different parts of the world. I love Ethiopian coffee the most, but there's some amazing tasting beans coming out of South America. Their "4 Machu Picchu" is out of Peru and has a hint of dark cocoa. It's currently my favourite.
They sell the coffee whole or ground. I have bought some beans that I had to grind myself before, but since I don't have a proper coffee grinder, I had to use my blender for the job. It was ok, but wasn't as smooth as when done properly.
Apart from the full-bodied taste you get from this kind of coffee, I also love the aroma. My entire kitchen smells like a coffee shop and I love it. You can actually buy coffee fragrances but this is the organic stuff I have here :)
Another benefit I've discovered thanks to a knowledgeable friend is that you can use the coffee residue as fertiliser in potted plants and flower beds. I've been pouring the residue into a glass container and using it for that purpose to enrich the soil for my plants. Now I'm looking forward to a spring full of nice healthy plants. ☕️ 🪴
