I have always wondered why it is that the whole idea of gossiping is related to tea. Who decided that? I think gossip is better shared with a cup of coffee. Maybe the idiom has to do with the fact that British are natural gossipers. But if that is true, then you cannot leave Latinos out of the equation. Have you ever seen two Latinos gossiping?
In my hometown, gossiping is like a regional sport. You can listen to it even when you are really far. People that live by the sea tend to speak at loud. It is related to our brain muting the sound of the sea and making it up with a higher voice volume.
A few days ago, I visited a friend to share some gossips about life, relationships and else. What did she do before I arrived to her workplace? Make some coffee, of course. Black coffee without sugar. I brought some snacks and we sat down for quite some time to share coffee in plastic cups. Sipping. Spilling the beans. And laughing our asses off.
I guess the spilling the beans idiom is related to coffee and not to tea. For starters, tea comes from leaves and not beans. Anyways, having a nice cup of coffee to share some gossip makes you feel like you're in the Era of Enlightenment. During those years that coffee came into Europe and people defeated the night and spent hours talking and theorizing and philosophizing.
It must have been a wonderful time of gossip. Maybe the Arabs had already invented the whole ritual of gossiping with coffee. They were the ones that made an institution out coffee. The Turks refined even more. And when it got to Europe, it became a fuel for knowledge.
Whenever I have a cup of coffee, I cannot help but think about this fact. In another time, I might have been in another place enjoying a different kind of coffee, but the idea of sharing it and talking will always be there.
Have you shared any gossips over coffee lately? If not, what are you waiting for? Life is too short to not enjoying the bonding experience of sharing a cup of coffee with a friend and also sharing some tea.
