Since moving to this little town and no Starbucks in sight, I only have two choices, either going to the nearest starbuck which is about a 4 hours drive or make it at home and be happy about it. Well, these days, I only have the latter, make it at home and be happy about it.
Caramel macchiato is a basic bitch drink. And I admit that I have inner basic bitch stuff especially when it comes to coffee. Anyway now, I am telling you how I make my dupe version of caramel macchiato at home with some basic ingredients and tools. You can also use instant coffee, that’s fine too. We’re on a budget so, let’s not talk about medium/dark roast Brazilian specialty coffee.
Here’s what I learned, vanilla syrup is important.
Without this syrup, there’s no caramel macchiato. And there’s no feeling like you’re inside a cozy starbucks(starbucks in Indonesia is cozy and not many karen around). It’s also a high-end coffee chain. So, there’s that.
Other than vanilla syrup you will need : 1. Coffee of your choice 2. Milk 3. Caramel syrup

I use nescafe decaf gold. You can use an instant nescafe sachet, that’s okay. Then add a bit of water and froth the coffee. Make it the greek frappe way but do not add too much water.
After the frothing is done, now put 2 teaspoons of vanilla syrup. You can go crazy on it if you like, perhaps add a bit of liquid sugar(I don’t add sugar).
Now, you need to froth the milk. I use regular milk. The secret to frothing milk without sophisticated tools is to only use 30ml of milk in 100ml cups. You will get smooth and frothy milk.
Add some ice cubes if you like, and drizzle some caramel sauce. If you like something really sweet, go crazy on it.
Finally, some people do it by either putting the milk first then espresso but in this case, I put the espresso first then the milk. I also put the milk foam on top and drizzled it for the last time with the caramel.
Ta-da! You have a copycat version of starbucks caramel macchiato.
If you still have their cups, you can use it too.
