Every year on the 17th August, Indonesians celebrate their independence day. This day is special to many Indonesians and is often followed by festive celebrations. I remember as a child, during this day there were many local community contests that were long-awaited by children. But these days, there aren't that many contests involving physical activities. The celebration overtime also changes but there's a certain tradition that I will explain a bit below.
Before the 17th August, during the 16th of August night, there are some simple get-togethers within the local/neighborhood community. They were praying and giving thanks to their god, the ancestors, and the people who fought before the independence day. Many meals are also served during this night and people would also chat over coffee/tea to talk about various things.
Since teenager, I was never really huge into celebrations anymore. I am indifferent about it and I don’t care as much as when I was a kid. Especially, these days where my days are practically the same; I have to sleep, wake up, and make money. I only know Sunday, as that’s the day when I get to sit and do some creative pursuits. But lately, I take interest in holidays because in some celebrations there are discounts here and there. Restaurants and fast-food chains would have some themed and also discounted items. Like Starbuck, this coffee shop chain is celebrating Independence day with Iced Mung Bean Latte and Iced Purple Rice Latte. They are also giving free donuts in the promotion.
To take advantage of the promotion, I ordered the Iced Mung Bean Latte. It was probably one of the most decent Starbucks menus that I actually like. There is a dash of coconut milk, crispy and savory aftertaste from the mungbean. It was definitely an interesting drink from Starbucks that I hoped would stay even after the 17th August.
As for the donut that comes with it, there was nothing special about the taste. It was just a donut with cream with red chocolate sprinkle. The color was chosen because red and white are the colors of the flag. The cups of the drink were also decorated with the red and white flag. Though I think that’s unnecessary because the cup would be thrown away.
I suppose, this is my first time as adult I care about this country’s independence day. At least now, I can celebrate it with discounted and exotic taste of coffee.
