So after my cotton candy coffee finding, a few days ago I found coffee flavoured bubble gum. I remember @millycf1976 said, “ What’s next?” and here’s next,
The Bubble Gum coffee!
I casually found this product after I got back from the gym. I went to a chain store, something like 7/11 but Indonesian. This coffee is ground coffee flavoured with bubble gum. Now this got me wondering if bubble gum, cotton candy, & perhaps candy flavoured coffee is going to be a thing. Then, at this point, I even wonder if there’s gonna be coffee flavoured mint.
This product is from ABC Kapal Api, a known instant and powder coffee company in Indonesia. Each pack has 12 coffee and extra 2 sachets. This coffee is also recommended to be served as Tubruk, a brewing style commonly used in Indonesia and uniquely Indonesian. It uses fine-ground coffee powder and is just mixed with water. I don’t like this brewing style because the coffee ground will still be on the ground of the cup; However, that’s the simplest way to serve coffee. Since I want to be a bit experimental, instead of tubruk, I use pour over method to enhance the aroma and also filter out the coffee ground. There's also many things missing from serving the coffee in tubruk style according to me.
Usually with this type of coffee, it’s already mixed with granulated sugar so we can still see the sugar in the coffee powder. Anyway, this coffee is going to be a diabetus coffee because I am making iced coffee and mixing it with coconut milk for the final result.
I also chose pour over because it was already late afternoon and from what I learn, pour over is a nice brewing style for late afternoon and early morning. There’s this book I read called Home Barista that helps me learn all things about brewing style. Just like the book said, pour over also brings out a clear brew, and well-rounded cup. You will see it in the method that I will show you below!
What’s my verdict?
The bubble gum aroma was quite bold and surprisingly the taste was pleasant. I did not expect that it would taste that good. It’s also not too sweet considering there’s sugar and also the bubble gum flavouring. However, the aftertaste is definitely bubble gum and no trace of coffee. I tried this before mixing the coffee into more diabetus concoction 😂
I am honestly not sure if this product is going to make it out there. Maybe people will try out of curiosity but that’s about it. I rarely see people around me drink flavoured coffee like this. But maybe people also buy this because it’s economical and easier to find. Anyhow, what I can appreciate is that this product also tries to elevate traditional brewing style as something that’s trendy with its flavour because tubruk coffee is something that is often found in warungs instead of cafes and it’s mostly just pure black coffee.
