Surprise! This week is not like every other week… I will have a different coffee brand in my blog. And you may wonder what’s the reason behind that. Let’s explain!
Last week we went to a name day party to one of a friend of mine. He was very kind to offer some coffee before going on towards the beer, so I could not resist this, knowing that he has this specialty coffee brand. My wife liked the coffee a lot so she asked me to buy a bag of this coffee. And here we are!
When I bought the coffee I went for searching the roast date. It was on the back of the coffee and it said 26-10-2022, which is before about 3 months. I’m not used to such old beans, if they can be defined as old, but when I get my Dabov deliveries the beans are no more than a week or two old. I know the logistics of transporting the coffee from Germany is not that simple and this is the advantage to buy from a local roaster. I’m relieved a bit from the words “USE WITHIN 9 MONTHS AFTER ROAST”. We are about a third in they time span.
Another information that I was seeking was the roast level, but there was nothing said about that on the bag. Anyway, there was a bit of information about the origin and the beans’ variety. The process is also stated. It’s a combined fermentation and washed method. The expected flavors are caramel, passion fruit and orange blossom.
When I compared the beans to the Dabov Signature Blend, they were quite similar in the roast profile, so I assume these can also be classified as Medium-Light.
On the left: Dabov; On the right: 19 grams.
Another interesting information… on the bottom of the front label it’s written “Filter” and although I’m pretty sure that these would taste pretty good brewed either way, they will taste best when brewed on V60. This was one more reason to buy this bag of beans. There wasn’t much of a choice when I was in the shop. The other type was Low Caffeine beans, so my choice was the wiser one. I have about half a kilo Dabov Signature Blend beans, but I like them only espresso brewed. This 19 grams bag filled the empty space of V60 coffee in my house. Last week I didn’t have a proper and tasty V60 coffee and I was a bit sad…
I had 21 grams of coffee (not 19 😁) in the grinder and 21 grams out in the filter. One thing I started to do is that I clean my grinder every time before brewing V60. This eliminates a lot of the tiny particles that give harsh flavor in the cup and clog the filtering paper. This is one more reason why I need another grinder to dedicate entirely for espresso, but I currently don’t want to spend $300-400. It will wait a bit more. My grinder is perfect for filter and if I don’t grind espresso, I will eliminate the unwanted harshness.
When my water boils I started to put some cold water in the pot. When I reduce the temperature to about 90 degrees, another level of harshness is being removed. I end up with cleaner tasting cup of coffee. I also normalized my brewing time, although I think that a bit more fine tuning is needed to achieve the perfect cup.
Today’s brewing time was a little less than 3 minutes and my coffee was ready. The water needed for 21 grams of coffee is 330 ml, and that is in the norms of coffee to water ratio for V60 brewing method. No clogging, no draining issues. Problem solved for now! It’s time to enjoy my cup of flavorful morning coffee.
It was a really nice aroma everywhere in the house. I haven’t expected anything different from a specialty coffee. The flavor? It is really fresh and fruitful with some sourness. This is why there is a slight citrus touch to the flavor. The toffee-caramel flavor blends well in the aftertaste. This makes the coffee quite complex and balanced. There is adequate sweetness in the cup. I like this a lot. Maybe I’ll grind one step coarser next time in order to remove just a little bit of remaining bitterness.
In general, the coffee is very good and the pricing is similar to Dabov coffee’s mid class beans. This makes it a bit more expensive, but still in the range. I may buy 19 grams bags from time to time in order to try different flavor beans. Anyway, I’ll most probably stick to Dabov coffee most of the time.
That’s for now! See you soon and hope that you’ll ha e a great weekend. Stay positive and happy and enjoy your favorite drink. After all that is the only right way to drink your coffee, as we all understood already.
