A perfect space to focus.
Independent libraries never fail to amazed me. Because opening a place that provides so many books to read for free very inspiring to me. Arisza Library and Learning space wrote on their instagram bio as a “Destination for readers, writers, and coffee lovers”. And maybe I came to this place in the perfect time, because I was the first visitor that day so it’s like I could enjoy the space completely for my self😁
When we first enter this library, hundreds of books neatly arranged on the bookshelf gently greeted us. I don't know what's the reason but this place even has decoration related to music as you can see below. And the corner that shouldn’t be missed, of course, is the Harry Potter corner. There is a display of Gryffindor uniform next to a bookshelf filled with Harry Potter books and decorations. It’s just a simple thing that Potterheads will really appreciate.
Arisza Library has a cozy and homie atmosphere. With many seating options, visitors can choose the one that feel most comfortable for themselves. There are a group table, individual desks, and even a carpeted area for those who want to sit comfortably on the floor. The individual desk is definitely my favorite because it does look like a real desk dedicated for visitors who want to be alone and focus more. There is also a sound of gurgling water, which makes the atmosphere feel more serene. It’s a great place to unwind down amidst the hustle and bustle of Surabaya city.
I ordered a coffee milk, which by the way they named the menu after the titles of Indonesian books. The coffee was arrived in a beautiful layer and tastes good. For me this place is really the perfect place to focus, but also because there was only one other visitor when I was there. And unfortunately, because I was there to get something done and I can focus, I ended up didn’t read a single page and just wandered around to see the book collection. That was quite unfortunate because they have a variety of good books from fiction, non-fiction, science, even comics.
I read an article where the owner said that this library is free to visit, but they don’t allow visitors to bring foods and drinks from outside. Arisza Library has a café in the front area, so visitor can choose to spend time outdoor or indoor while enjoying their order. For me, what’s a bit confusing about an independent space like this is.. can we come without buying anything? I don’t think so. Beside it will be awkward, I think buying something from their café is also a way to support independent libraries like this to survive.
Because not only providing a space, Arisza Library is also known to have many activities such as a live book review, workshops, and other collaborations. I have never attended any of those, but I truly appreciate their efforts to maintain the interest in literacy, especially in this digital era. Because clearly there are many challenges, so I hope they can continue those activities.
And lastly, they also sell handcrafts and some kind of merchandise, I guess. There are also some “blind date with a book” packages. So visitors can take a look and purchase if they’re interested. That’s all for today. Upvote for more places and café reviews, reblog is also appreciated :) Thanks for reading!
