A tasty coffee served at Minerva, the most famous Confectionery in Craiova, Romania
Hello everyone
It's been a while since I've posted in this community, but on my last trip to Craiova (Romania), besides the very popular sights, I visited another amazing place, namely the Minerva Confectionery.
I had seen many photos of this place and as I am curious by nature I wanted to get here to see the differences between reality versus online.
This place is not a coffee shop but even so I had read that they have great coffee here.
This place is not just any place but it has an impressive history so I'll leave below some information that I have discovered.
This building was constructed between 1898 and 1903 according to the plans of the architects Thoma Dobrescu and D. Nedelcu. The building was constructed on the land that was then the property of the Madona Dudu epitropy. The documents of the time speak of a contract concluded on November 23, 1896 between the epitropies of the Madona Dudu Church of Craiova (Gh. Anghelescu and A. Carianopol) and the architect Th. Dobrescu from Bucharest "for the drawing up of plans for the rebuilding of a new premises in Craiova in the place of the demolished one called Casinul Minerva, the cost of which should not exceed, as far as possible, the sum of 500 thousand lei". The building was to have a shop, a confectionery and a cafe and in the cellars and under the floors there would be facilities for the confectionery laboratories. In the main body of the building there was to be a Club and hotel rooms. The majestic building will gather together important names of times gone by, becoming the symbol of Craiova of yesteryear, but also a true shrine of culture to which artists of great value of times gone by have knelt.
Minerva has also hosted important people of the world: General Charles De Gaule, Ciu En Lai and Nikita Khrushchev.
The architectural style is less common in our country, inspired by Arab / Moorish architecture. Typical for this style are the door or window openings closed at the top with an arch of more than 180 degrees, the openings closed in a 180-degree arch and multi-lobed, as well as the polychrome geometric decoration.
In the old days there were shops on the ground floor, and upstairs, large and elegant saloons, where they played cards and billiards, where not just anyone could enter, luxury and, especially, prices were not affordable for everyone, so the most frequent characters who crossed the threshold were among the boyars of Craiova.
As you may have read above, Minerva is amazing, today I'll just stick to the Minerva Confectionery where I had an amazing experience.
It is located in the historic center of Craiova in a quiet area, we got here using a Bolt (taxi).
I liked very much the idea of using only natural ingredients in making cakes, opening its doors somewhere in 2015.
From my first steps here I smelled a subtle whiff of freshly ground coffee and other pleasant smells, but I couldn't figure out what they were.
Many of the tables were already booked, but somehow I got lucky and found a table, I really wanted to have a good coffee and something sweet.
I made the order and before it arrived at our table I took a few steps through the restaurant to see how it looks in reality, honestly, everything is impeccable, it is exactly as I saw on the internet, spectacular.
There, the coffee arrived but also some pieces of cakes made with taste and soul (I couldn't resist the temptation), I think we had some of the best cakes in a pastry shop, they all tasted like home, I forgot one thing, to ask what coffee they used, it had a flavor I've never tasted before.
We quietly enjoyed the coffee with the taste of home-flavored pastries and the tranquility of the place, so if any of you ever get to Romania and of course Craiova I recommend Minerva's Confectionery will definitely be an amazing experience.
THE END!
