Love them or hate them, at a certain point of the year slugs always come around. Often after some heavy rainfall you can see them coming out when the sun starts to set.
I know last year at least for me, but I also saw a lot of other people complaining about the big big slugfest, the slugs were an absolute plague in my allotment eating their way into literally every seedling that I had planted.
It also had a lot to do with that the period of heavy rainfall was long and early in the year, together with some higher temperatures.
This year is very much different in this here in the Netherlands compared to last year. It feels like it has been endlessly sunny for weeks or even months and there was not a slug to be seen.
This changed a bit over the last couple of weeks as finally some rain has reached. That was a good thing actually, as nature really needed some rain to keep everything going.
With that return...that is where they also returned
Of course after this rain that is also when they started to come out again. Slowly creeping with no real goal to head to.
And this time I don't really care about it. My seedlings are way beyond the size of that they can be eaten fast by the slugs. And I guess they are doing something functional for nature, (Although I am not sure what that is, apart from that they are awesome duck food), so it is nice to see them back again.
This one was last around the green and decided to creep over the stone looking a bit lost as he was spiralling in multiple directions as you can see on his slug trail of slime.
But looking at all of this happening by this slimeguy, this was finally a moment to also take a look again how cool they actually are.
Yeah true, I literally hated them last year because of their demolishing skills, but they are animals that are also just trying to get by and minding their business.
Just take a look at their texture and patterns on the body. It is just like a painting right?
This specific slug was a bit funny even because every minute he was lifting his head to take a peek around and then he changed his direction afterwards. (yeah, I was not in a rush and took a good time to all see what this dude was doing) Slugs have their eyes on their tentacles, but they can only 'see' light and dark with them.
I can imagine why he was lost now on the dark tiles, it must have been confusing.
Anyhow, I am glad that I was finally able to enjoy the sight of these guys again and not just only being entirely annoyed. Nature is pretty cool right?
