Coffee and bread || Café con pan [w152e1]

This happened just last week. On Tuesday morning my wife and I walked down the street where we live and there was a group of four people clearing the streets of weeds growing on the pavements. It was a sunny morning. As we passed them we said ‘Good morning’ and they said ‘Good morning’ back.

The next morning they continued working. This time, from my house I heard the work tools. Then I looked out of the front window and saw one of them working. They had moved in the direction of our house and had already started on the area in front of us. It was another sunny morning, and they were dressed in long-sleeved flannels and a wide hat to protect them from the sun.

I have done hard outdoor work in the blazing sun. So if I were them I would have a similar look: clothes that covered every inch of my body and left only my eyes uncovered. That's why I really appreciate the work that these people do for the community. Without them, I would have to clear the front of the house of weeds myself.

I know they get paid, but why not do them a kind gesture by taking advantage of the fact that they are doing us a service? So I went out front, waved and counted them. There were four people. I went back inside the house and made coffee. I had bought some bread the previous afternoon, so I sliced a few pieces and toasted them on the griddle with some butter. When the coffee was ready, I sweetened it (strange for me because I drink it unsweetened), and served it in cups with a slice of bread in each.

I went out, and took them to each of them. They were very appreciative. In fact, one of them was pleasantly surprised, and said that similar things had been done for them by my mother, which pleased me as it speaks well of the reputation she has left in the neighbourhood. We chatted for a while and I went home because I was doing some homework.

We've done things like this before with other people, like the rubbish collectors on the trucks. I think these are good ways of thanking them for the important work they do, which by the way, not everyone is willing to accept, as they consider it demeaning. What would we be without them? There is no street cleaning and people protest, the streets are dirty and people protest? So they are important, and considering how low their salaries are, these gestures of kindness help them to keep a good attitude towards their jobs.

Of course, whenever I can, I will always be willing to do some similar actions like this with those who provide the public services of sanitation and space conditioning. Their work is important and beyond just feeling grateful I want to show it. Who knows, maybe one day it will be me who will have that job someday. The world is round and constantly turning. Ésto sucedió justo la semana pasada. El martes en la mañana mi esposa y yo caminamos por la calle donde vivimos y había un grupo de cuatro personas limpiando las calles de la maleza que crece en las aceras. Era una mañana soleada. Al pasar frente a ellos les dimos los "Buenos días" y ellos nos respondieron igual.

La mañana siguiente continuaron trabajando. Esta vez, desde mi casa escuché las herramientas de trabajo. Entonces me asomé por la ventana del frente y vi a una de ellas trabajando. Habían avanzado en dirección a nuestra casa y ya habían empezado con la zona frente a nosotros. Era otra mañana soleada, y ellos visten con franelas mangas largas y un sombrero ancho para protegerse del sol.

He realizado trabajos duros al aire libre bajo un sol inclemente. Así que si yo fuera ellos tendría un aspecto similar: ropa que cubriera cada centímetro de mi cuerpo y sólo dejara descubierto mis ojos. Por eso, valoro mucho el trabajo que ese tipo de personas hacen a favor de la comunidad. Sin ellos, yo mismo tuviera que despejar el frente de la casa de la maleza.

Sé que a ellos le pagan, pero ¿por qué no hacer un gesto bondadoso con ellos aprovechando que están haciéndonos un servicio? Así que salí al frente, saludé y los conté. Eran cuatro personas. Volví dentro de la casa y preparé café. Había comprado pan la tarde anterior, así que rebané unos pedazos y los tosté en la plancha con un poco de mantequilla. Cuando el café estuvo listo, lo endulcé (extraño para mí porque yo lo tomo sin endulzar), y lo serví en tazas con una rebanada de pan en cada una.

Salí, y se los llevé a cada uno. Ellos lo agradecieron mucho. De hecho, una de ellas se sorprendió gratamente, y dijo que cosas parecidas las había hecho mi madre por ellos, algo que me contentó puesto que eso habla bien de la reputación que ella ha dejado en el vecindario. Conversamos por unos instantes y volví a casa porque estaba haciendo algunas tareas.

Cosas así las hemos hecho antes con otras personas, como los que recogen la basura en los camiones. Creo que son buenas maneras de agradecerles el importante trabajo que realizan, que por cierto, no todos están dispuestos a aceptar, ya que lo consideran denigrante. ¿Qué sería de nosotros sin ellos? Es que no pasa el aseo urbano y la gente protesta, las calles están sucias y la gente protesta... Así que ellos son importantes, y teniendo en cuenta lo bajo que son sus sueldos, estos gestos de bondad los ayudan a conservar una buena actitud ante sus trabajos.

Por supuesto, siempre que pueda estaré dispuesto a hacer algunas acciones parecidas como estas con aquellos que prestan los servicios públicos de aseo y adecuación de espacios. Su labor es importante y más allá de sólo sentir el agradecimiento deseo demostrárselo. Quién sabe, tal vez algún día sea yo quien tenga ese empleo algún día. El mundo es redondo y gira constantemente. ¡Hasta la próxima!
