My library is ageing || Envejece mi biblioteca [w158e2]

I am convinced that there are children who have never set foot in a library, but are there teenagers who have never been to a library? Maybe. Are these spaces still useful? Please join me in expressing my opinion.

First of all, it is appropriate to say that I greatly value the contribution that libraries have made throughout history. It is a place of broad knowledge where many generations have come to broaden their knowledge and continue their studies, large and small.

I remember the first library I remember visiting almost 30 years ago. It was small, as it belonged to a rural location. There were large tables with several chairs around them. Bookshelves separated the tables creating a kind of room for each piece of furniture. There was a section for children, where there were books suitable for them and a space in the middle where they could lie on the floor and browse for a while.

In my teenage years I remember visiting a larger one in a city. It was far from home so I didn't like to go there in the afternoons to do research with my classmates. The rules for being there were stricter, as I even received adults who came from universities. My best memory of those places? All the times I had to hold in my laughter so as not to be scolded. Why is it harder to hold back when you are told: ‘Don't laugh’?

But the actuality of these two spaces, like many others around the world, is that fewer and fewer people are going there. It is more common for us to turn to digital sources and artificial intelligence to do our own research, often from our own homes. However, I believe that our society is not yet ready to leave such an element of knowledge behind.

Today there are many digital sources of content and research. But how do we know that they contain absolutely everything that the printed books in libraries show? I think that eliminating books that are still unpublished in their studies is scary. There could be years of hard work there that could end up in the trash because of a miscalculation.

Also, I think an irreplaceable part that great libraries have is those fragments of old things that helped previous generations to know. They serve as a kind of museum, because they display original items that are very well preserved. I think those items are of great value for our generation and those to come. They help us to know where we come from.

Am I trying to say that libraries should never cease to exist? Not necessarily. I repeat: I believe that our society is not yet ready to leave libraries behind. But I am in favour of a simplification of libraries. For example, I think that the spaces that are used can be better used. Perhaps a reduction of furniture for people could help to better distribute the book shelves and free up space in the building. That space could be used for research rooms with computers with internet service. Or perhaps for face-to-face courses in different areas. Who knows if it would generate some income that could be used to maintain the structure.

And while we are on the subject of money, I believe that the budget allocated to public libraries should not be significant in this era. That's why I think that leasing space in these places can help these structures to be able to support themselves financially. That would be wonderful, provided of course that the money is well managed and controlled.

In addition, a gradual and comprehensive programme of digitisation of printed books can go a long way in ensuring that printed knowledge is preserved. In addition, some libraries are known to have several copies of the same book. Not having so many copies of the same book can help to optimise space. And if it is already digitised, even better.

This post has made me want to revisit the first library I remember. I have a chance to do it since I'm close, and at least take some good pictures there. I don't know if it will be a nice experience or rather a sad one. But I'm sure we'll be around again to tell you about it. See you next time!

Estoy convencido de que existen niños que no han pisado nunca una biblioteca. ¿Existirán adolescentes que tampoco hayan ido a un lugar de esos? Tal vez. ¿Siguen siendo útiles esos espacios? Por favor, acompáñame a expresar mi opinión.

Primeramente, es oportuno decir de que valoro mucho el aporte que han hecho las bibliotecas a través de la historia. Es un lugar de conocimiento amplio donde han acudido muchas generaciones en busca de ampliar sus saberes y continuar estudios grandes y pequeños.

Recuerdo la primera biblioteca que recuerdo haber visitado hace casi 30 años. Era pequeña, puesto que pertenece a un sitio rural. Habían mesas grandes con varias sillas alrededor. Los estantes de libros separaban las mesas creando una especie de salas para cada mobiliario. Había una sección para niños, donde había libros adecuados para ellos y un espacio en el centro donde podían tirarse al suelo y hojear un rato.

En mis años de adolescencia recuerdo visitar una más grande en una ciudad. Quedaba lejos de casa por lo que no me gustaba frecuentar en las tardes para investigar con mis compañeros. Las normas para estar allí eran más estrictas, puesto que incluso recibía personas adultas que acudían de las universidades. ¿Mi mejor recuerdo de esos lugares? Todas las veces que tenía que aguantar la risa para no ser regañados. ¿Por qué es más difícil contenerse cuando te dicen: "No te rías"?

Pero la actualidad de esos dos espacios, como de muchos otros a nivel mundial, es que cada vez acuden menos personas. Es más común que acudamos a fuentes digitales y la inteligencia artificial para hacer nuestras propias investigaciones, muchas veces desde nuestra misma casa. Con todo, creo que aún nuestra sociedad no está preparada para dejar atrás semejante elemento del saber.

Hoy hay muchas fuentes digitales de contenido y estudio. Pero, ¿cómo sabemos que contienen absolutamente todo lo que muestran los libros impresos en las bibliotecas? Creo que eliminar libros que aún sean inéditos en sus estudios da miedo. Podrían haber ahí años de arduo trabajo que podrían ir a parar en la basura por un error de cálculo.

Además, creo que una parte irremplazable que tienen las grandes bibliotecas es esos fragmentos de cosas antiguas que ayudaron a conocer generaciones anteriores. Sirven como una especie de museo, porque exhiben piezas originales muy bien conservadas. Creo que esos elementos tienen un gran valor para nuestra generación y las venideras. Nos ayudan a saber de dónde venimos.

¿Intento decir que las bibliotecas no deberían de dejar de existir nunca? No necesariamente. Repito: creo que aún nuestra sociedad no está preparada para dejar atrás a las bibliotecas. Pero sí estoy a favor de una simplificación de ellas. Por ejemplo, creo que los espacios que se usan pueden ser mejor aprovechados. Quizás una reducción de mobiliario para personas pueda ayudar a que los estantes de libros sean mejor distribuidos y se libere espacio en el edificio. Ese espacio pudiera ser utilizado para salas de investigación con computadoras con servicio de internet. O tal vez, para impartir cursos presenciales sobre diferentes áreas. Quien sabe si serviría para generar algo de ingreso que sirva para el mantenimiento de esa estructura.

Y ya que hablamos de dinero, creo que el presupuesto asignado a las bibliotecas públicas no debe ser significativo en ésta era. Por eso creo que el arrendamiento de espacios en esos lugares puede ayudar a que esas estructuras sean capaces de mantenerse financieramente por ellas mismas. Eso sería maravilloso, contando por supuesto con una buena administración y control del dinero.

Además, un programa paulatino y exhaustivo de digitalización de los libros impresos puede llegar a ser muy útil para asegurarnos de conservar el conocimiento impreso. Además, es sabido que en algunas bibliotecas cuentan con varios ejemplares del mismo libro. No tener tantas copias de un mismo libro puede ayudar a optimizar el espacio. Y si ya está digitalizado, mejor aún.

Este post me ha hecho querer volver a visitar la primera biblioteca que recuerdo. Tengo oportunidad de hacerlo puesto que estoy cerca, y al menos tomar allí unas buenas fotos.
