We all want to be good workers, even if we are our own boss. The economic scenario sometimes changes and we find ourselves working for someone else, or we alternate between the two. And it is very likely that we are in contact with someone else on a regular basis. That's why the so-called soft skills take on an important significance. Today I want to focus on some of them, which for some people are very important.
Time management. Time is one of the resources that are not recovered. "Wasting time" is a phrase that can be interpreted literally. Although every employee needs to demonstrate that he or she is not slacking off during working hours, this skill goes beyond that, because we are not only talking about the employee's time, but also about the company's time.
On a small or large scale, companies establish methods, procedures and analyses that take up time. Not all workers are capable of optimizing the time invested. Proposals to improve processes attract a lot of attention from boards of directors. Doing the same thing in less time without sacrificing quality will always be good business.
Communication. This is very important. In an organization chart we will most likely have people and departments above us and below us. We need to be very communicative people to keep things flowing. One of the things that does a lot of damage to an organization is not transmitting true and timely information. Or worse, transmitting it to the wrong people.
This skill has a certain complexity, because as human beings we communicate differently. Men tend to communicate in one way and women in another, and there are differences between women, just as there are between men. Personality, patterns, past experiences, all these things shape the way we communicate. And who pays the price? Well, the company where we work. For me, this skill is very important, but not so easy to decipher and tabulate.
Flexibility. The scenarios in which organizations operate are changing, in areas such as taxation, the economy, legislation, personnel, customers, suppliers.... And these changes can happen overnight. That's why key workers must be flexible, adapting to continue pursuing the mission and vision they have as a whole. This implies taking advantage of available resources, i.e., doing the best possible with what you have.
It is interesting that for this aspect the use of smartphones can help a lot, such as messaging services to make plans efficiently in groups or direct messages. Also to do on-the-spot research to assess what needs to be done, the factors involved and thus measure the impact of changes - even a simple calculator can be very useful!
There are other skills, but I just wanted to talk about these three. The interesting thing about this is that we can write a lot of them on a resume, but they will be checked when we carry it out, as the weeks go by. Those simple mentions can speak for themselves after a few months. They can tell if we are what we say we are, or if we are something else.
Todos queremos ser buenos trabajadores, incluso si somos nuestro propio jefe. El escenario económico a veces cambia y nos encontramos trabajando para alguien más, o también alternamos entre ambas situaciones. Y es muy probable de que estemos en contacto con alguien más con regularidad. Por eso, las llamadas habilidades blandas cobran un importante significado. Hoy quiero enfocarme en algunas de ellas, que para algunos con muy importantes.
Gestión del tiempo. Es uno de los recursos que no se recuperan. "Perder el tiempo" es una frase que puede interpretarse literal. Aunque todo trabajador necesita demostrar de que no está holgazaneando en horas laborales, ésta habilidad va más allá, porque no solo estamos hablando del tiempo del empleado sino de la empresa.
A pequeña o gran escala, las empresas establecen métodos, procedimientos y análisis que ocupan tiempo. No todos los trabajadores son capaces de optimizar el tiempo invertido. Las propuestas para mejorar los procesos llaman mucho la atención de las juntas directivas. Hacer lo mismo, en menos tiempo sin sacrificar la calidad, siempre será un buen negocio.
Comunicación. Ésta es muy importante. En una organigrama muy probablemente tendremos personas y departamentos por encima de nosotros y por debajo de nosotros. Necesitamos ser personas muy comunicativas para que las cosas fluyan. Una de las cosas que hacen mucho daño a una organización es no transmitir información verdadera y oportuna. O peor aún, transmitírselo a quien no debemos.
Ésta habilidad tiene cierta complejidad, porque como seres humanos nos comunicamos de forma diferente. Los hombres tendemos a comunicarnos de una forma y las mujeres de otras, y entre mujeres hay diferencias, igual que entre los hombres. La personalidad, los patrones, las vivencias del pasado, todo eso moldea nuestra forma de comunicarnos. ¿Y quién paga los platos rotos? Pues, la empresa donde trabajamos. Para mí, ésta habilidad es muy importante, pero no tan fácil de descifrar y tabularla.
Flexibilidad. Los escenarios donde se desenvuelven las organizaciones van cambiando, en ámbitos como los impuestos, la economía, la legislación, el personal, los clientes, los proveedores... Y estos cambios pueden ocurrir de la noche a la mañana. Por eso, los trabajadores claves deben ser flexibles, adaptarse para seguir buscando la misión y visión que tienen en conjunto. Eso implica aprovechar los recursos disponibles, es decir, hacer lo mejor posible con lo que se tiene.
Es interesante que para este aspecto el manejo de los teléfonos inteligentes pueden ayudar mucho, como los servicios de mensajería para armar planes de forma eficiente en grupos o mensajes directos. También para hacer las investigaciones en el momento y así evaluar lo que hay que hacer, los factores implicados y así medir el impacto de los cambios. ¡Hasta una sencilla calculadora puede ser muy útil!
Existen otras habilidades más, pero sólo quise hablar de éstas tres. Lo interesante de esto es que podemos escribir muchos en un currículum, pero se comprobarán cuando la llevemos a cabo, con el paso de las semanas. Ésas sencillas menciones pueden hablar por sí solas al cabo de unos meses. Pueden decir si somos lo que decimos, o si somos algo más.
