Too early <=> Too improvised
When I say "impromptu exam" it takes me back to those first hours of class in middle and high school. I don't know why, but I was not known for arriving early to my study places, so more than once I arrived late and found my classmates in an unusual order and tranquility. I could say loudly and clearly "Good morning ", and hardly anyone would respond. And after taking a few steps into the classroom I would wonder: "What is this guy doing sitting here first in line if he always sits last? " Then it all clicked: there was a test and I didn't know!🤦♂
I was fortunate that one of the years of middle school I was able to take it with my brother. He repeated a year and then I caught up with him. As we were in a technical school, we saw pure electricity on Mondays, all morning, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. with a couple of teachers. And on Fridays, at the same time, we saw electricity applied to household appliances with a couple of teachers, although one of them was the same as on Mondays. We watched classes in a large workshop.
Then the surprise evaluations began to arrive on some of those days. How did I do? Better than other classmates. As it turned out, it was hard for me to get up early and attend on Mondays. But my brother didn't, maybe not so much because he liked to study, but because he already wanted to see his classmates. So, upon hearing that there was a surprise group evaluation, he would include me as a member of his team, assuming I would be there any minute. But several times I didn't show up. So I would pass those evaluations without lifting a finger.😎
Please don't think I was taking advantage of my brother. He didn't like to study on Fridays, so I did attend, and when the evaluations for that day came, can you guess what happened? Yes, I would include him and several times he didn't show up. So I would also pass without attending. It wasn't until the third and last evaluation period that the teacher noticed the issue and decided to keep an eye on us. But so what? We had passed the subject. It should be noted that I still treat that professor. In fact, he is my friend, we get along very well. But every time he wants to embarrass me, he expresses some such episode to anyone.🤣
In university I still had the same problem of getting up early and getting to class on time. In fact, I wondered why I was enrolling in those subjects on my own. Anyway, I tried to get into the classroom without attracting anyone's attention. But I remember one time I was an hour late, and there I found out that there was an exam. The teacher with an arrogant tone asked me if I would still take the exam, because I probably wouldn't have time to take it. It was a subject that I had mastered since middle school, and in fact, I chose to be late because I thought I already knew what they were going to explain that day (you know how some of us are at the end of our adolescence, we think we have the world in our hands). So I told the professor: "Give me the exam and I'll do my best ". It was one page with select, complete and answer questions. In about 20 minutes I answered absolutely everything, handed in my exam and left before anyone who had arrived before me. The surprise for my classmates was a few days later to see that I got the top grade.
Was I very smart? No, simply because it was one of the subjects I had already mastered, I didn't give it so much importance, and I made an effort to reinforce what I knew with what I heard when I entered the class. Obviously, this was not the case with all subjects. Some of them I really had trouble understanding and passing.😰
In short: what did I learn from my early morning pop quizzes? That if you're going to be late for subjects, make sure you choose the right ones. Not all of them will have a big brother to watch your back.😇
