I could remember how much i had passion for human health right from childhood days and how i remember telling my
familes and friends of becoming a medical doctor in the future.
But as God will have it, i ended up becoming a microbiologist. Medical doctor turns to microbiologist. It's quite funny. Although at first, i loose interest because i believe that microbiology has no prospect in Nigeria. But the more i grew and meet other people in field, i had more enlightenment and i got to love the course the more.
Apart from blogging on Hive platform, my other source of living is being a microbiologist and a reseacher in the field of science. I started working as a researcher barely two years ago and this has really opened my eyes to more interesting aspect of microbiology. Microbiology is simply the study of micro-organism. As we all know, we are surrounded by microorganisms both the beneficial ones or the harmful ones. Due to my passion for human health, I major specifically on medical microbiology, which is related to infectious diseases and human health. This aspect of microbiology as thought me how to appreciate life and Science.
One of the interesting part of this field is the ability to diagnose and identify the cause of a disease right in the labouratory. I have several cases of patients who were admitted with serious ailment and with the help of labouratory diagnoses through the specimen/samples collected from the patient, adequate treatment was done and the patients were cured within the shortest period of time.
That's not the only interesting part. How about antimicrobial susceptibility testing? I will try and explain this term in a simplified way. This is the labouratory testing of antibiotics that will help in curing a particular patient from a disease before been administered. These has being of help to patient at various health centres and clinics.
I love the part that i could save life and create an healthy environment through this career path. If i'm given an opportunity to change from being a microbiologist, i won't. I have become so fond of it, that i won't let go for anything else. Health is wealth and I'm passionate about establishing healthy living within our society.
Recently, i conducted research trying to identify other species of malaria parasites among adult and children in a healthcare system. It was indeed a taskful one because i needed a minimum of 300 participant. Many are skeptical in donating their blood samples of which i don't blame them due to societal reasons. I had to travel for molecular analysis which are part of the challenges of being a researcher. But the joy about this was that i was able to complete the research succesfully. This research indeed opened my eyes to some other interesting aspect and opportunities in respect to human health.
As Microbiologist, i have carried out researches that has help in identifying the root cause of some infectious disease of which it has helped in laying emphasis on the importance of healthy leaving within the society. Being a microbiogist, i promise to put in my best in making our society a better place.
