Nearly everyone gets angry at one point or the other. Even Jesus Christ got angry at the temple when it was turned into a marketplace. He chased and overturned their tables. So it is normal to get angry, but it is bad to stay angry.
As the Bible will teach us, do not allow the sun to set on your anger. This, therefore, acknowledges the fact that we will surely get angry, but don't dwell in the anger.
While growing up, I had some anger issues. I was easily flared up by little things and I will feel sad for a long time over it. I did so many things out of anger which I later regretted. However, one day, one of my school teachers then sat me down and talked me out of it. Since then I made up my mind to make conscious efforts to stay out of anger. After so many years of practice, I can say that now, I can't even remember the last time I dwelt in anger.
So, I can say that anger is a habit. When you dwell in it, it becomes a part of you. But when you form the habit of staying out of anger, you live a free life. People have done so many terrible things out of anger. People have committed murder, burnt items, smashed their phones, etc. These are the dangers of anger.
While anger can be a tool to bring a change, it must be a controlled anger. Anger can bring a positive change when it enables us to face our challenges with boldness. A controlled anger can be a motivation for us to take some positive actions.
I once utilized anger on the good side the day I registered for my PUTME. When I got to the bank, the security man told me that they had closed for the day. I looked at my time, it was still some minutes from the normal bank closing hour and that was the last day of the putme registration. I was angry and I stood there. The man was allowing people inside to come out but wasn't allowing people outside to go in. Immediately he opened the door for someone to come out, I quickly held the door trying to force myself inside. That created a scene there. People gathered and after much talk, they judged the case in my favor since it wasn’t the closing time yet. So I entered the bank and registered for my putme. That was how I registered for the putme that gave me admission into the university. This is an instance of a good use of anger to achieve a positive result.
However, An uncontrolled anger is very disastrous. I know a man who spent 15 years in prison out of anger. They were having a family meeting to plan their father's burial. Along the line in the meeting, they had a little misunderstanding. He left the meeting and unknowingly to everyone, he took a knife and laid ambush for the younger brother who he had a misunderstanding with. After the meeting, while the younger brother was going home with his wife and child who he was carrying on his shoulder, the man attacked them and stabbed the brother to death, and ran away. When the anger cleared from his eyes, he cried bitterly over the death of his brother. However, he was arrested by security agents and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. That was after several appeals by the family since it was a family matter. This is what anger can cause.
So anger is a two-edged sword. Our control over it determines which side of it that we use. While it's human to get angry, everyone should try to gain control over anger. This is what matters the most. We should form a habit of control over anger and never allow anger to control us.
This is my opinion on this week's edition topic on anger. Thanks for reading through.
