Indonesia is a country that has a variety of ethnicities and cultures, including Aceh, which has a culture that has been passed down from generation to generation from ancestors, and is still fully preserved by the local community. Talking about culture, Aceh is one area that has very strong traditions, especially in the tradition of wedding ceremonies.
Aceh has many traditions in wedding ceremonies. Each region in Aceh Province, has differences in the implementation of the wedding ceremony. Well friends, this time I will tell you a little about the customs in wedding ceremonies in Aceh Besar District, which is one of the areas where I live.
Aceh Besar is an area that is very close to the city of Banda Aceh, even though it has entered an urban area in Aceh, Aceh Besar still carries out the tradition of wedding ceremonies with quite thick customs.
Before the wedding celebration ceremony conducted, Aceh is very thick with for friendship, therefore before the wedding, there will be a mutual acquaintance between the two parties of the bride and groom. Friends, in Aceh the term for the bride and groom is often referred to as "Linto Baro" (the name for the groom) and "Dara Baro" (the name for the bride)". Before a legal marriage is carried out, the prospective groom first comes to visit the bride's house, this is for friendship, this event is called "Ba Ranup" or in modern language it is now called engagement.
Now after the "Ba Ranup" event, the bride and groom are ready to carry out a wedding or often referred to as the "Marry" event. The wedding ceremony itself, usually takes place a month or 2 months after the engagement ceremony, depending on the bride and groom's decision. The majority of Aceh's people are Muslim, so because of that, the wedding ceremony will take place in a solemn manner at the mosque or at home, according to the religious customs that we adhere to.
After the wedding ceremony, the next inauguration of the wedding is the walimah event which is often referred to by the Acehnese as "Party". Actually, the people of Aceh believe that this event is not a mandatory event, this event is a sunnah event in Islam, but because it has become a tradition, this event seems to have been closely embedded in people's lives.
This event is one of the peak events of the celebration of the marriage contract. Uniquely, in Aceh the party was held in 2 places, namely at the residence of the groom and the bride. This event is called "Preh Linto Baro" (the name for the wedding event at the bride's residence) and "Tueng Dara Baro" (the name for the wedding event at the groom's residence).
On the first day of the ceremony, it usually takes place in the woman's residence. In the event, the women prepare themselves by decorating themselves using traditional Acehnese clothes, on the aisle with colorful nuances according to the culture of the Acehnese people, women will be decorated as beautifully as possible to wait and welcome the groom and his family who will come to the event. The groom and his family will a welcome with dances and a variety of delicious dishes that are specially served, namely legendary Acehnese cuisines, one of which is Beulangong broth which is specially cooked by the local community to be enjoyed together at the wedding ceremony.
At that time, the groom also did not forget to bring gifts in the form of souvenirs, such as ornamental coconuts, sugar cane, Aceh mini houses. This is a souvenir that must be fulfilled by the groom. During this procession, there is also a "Peusijuek bride" event performed by the female host, this aims to bless and give thanks to the family for the bride and groom.
Two days later, it will continue the event at the groom's house that I have mentioned above is the "Tueng Dara Baro" event, in a separate sense tueng dara baro is a tradition where officially, the bride will be officially accepted by the groom's family , for a series of events it is the same as the event for the bride, with a reception using traditional Acehnese clothes and a banquet with culinary delights.
After the events on both sides, the ceremony for the ceremony was over, and the bride and groom officially became husband and wife. And ready to build a household in the next life.
