Hello everyone, how are you all doing on this beautiful day?
It is a beautiful day indeed, a good day to be happy and cheerful. It is also a good day to be compassionate and kind to our fellow humans. It is a good day to celebrate today’s holiday; Inconveniencing Yourself Day.
Humans are social animals; we all need people in our lives for one reason or the other. We have been so wired that we cannot survive on our own, we need other people who will help us do things that we can’t do by ourselves.
Many of us are introverts, we prefer to stay indoors and away from the noise and dirt that comes with having to go out and mingle with people. Because of this, we tend to rely heavily on the internet. We work remotely, we place orders for everything we need, sometimes even doctor's appointments will be held online.
But the truth is that all these things are also being done by people, even though they are probably on the other side of the world.
I am just trying to paint a picture of what I am trying to say, letting you all know how important it is for us to be good to the people around us simply because there is no other way it can be.
On this day, the Inconveniencing Yourself Day, we get to go out of our way just to make the people around us feel better or be better. These people do not have to be family or friends, they do not even have to be our neighbors who we know. It can be total strangers, people who will not be able to repay our acts of kindness. These are the people we are focusing on.
We get to put others first and go to great lengths to make them happy. Sure, it won’t be fun, things like these are not meant to be fun. But I can assure you that there is a kind of joy that comes from being kind and doing good deeds. This is a marvelous way to shift our focus and attention off ourselves and onto others for a change. Maybe that way we can get to see ourselves in a better light and learn some new things about ourselves which we never knew.
Inconvenience Yourself Day was started by Julie Thompson, she is an Environmental Consultant who lives in Florida. She was the one that noticed how bad the world could get for some people and how some people were just unable to cope on their own. She realized just how important it was for people all over the world to pay attention to their fellow humans all around them. The world was full of pain and suffering, and she wanted to be a part of the solution.
With all I have said, I am sure you have seen the importance of having to be kind. Also, there are other benefits, even biologically.
When we are kind or compassionate, we get a boost in our dopamine and serotonin levels. These are the ‘feel-good’ chemicals of our brain. When we show these acts, they make us feel better about ourselves and we just want to do more of it.
So, as you go about your duties and concerns, I hope you lookout for a situation where you can be of help to at least one person. It can be anywhere and it can be at any time. But try and make sure you do it today. It will be a way of celebrating the holiday. And a way of making some sad people look at the world in a better light.
There are still good people in this world, you and I can be the ones to remind the people of this fact.
