It hurts to be stigmatized for situations we can't control, this is why most people will choose to stay in an abusive relationship that could take their life because they fear how others will see them, and what people would say.

Some people are not trying at all with their bad mouth and if you dig deep into their background you will realize they are miserable and only mock others to make themselves feel better.
It is worse when it has to do with some incurable diseases like Hiv, it is understandable that most people might not want to associate themselves with people having it but it costs nothing to be nice to them and also not to make jest of them or judge them cos we don't know how it happened, it is not everyone with this disease that contacted it from being promiscuous, some were just unfortunate, I heard of a case in which the victim contacted it from a blade he used which was already infected by someone with the disease but people don't understand this or refuse to enrich themselves with knowledge and they believe everyone with the disease contacted it through sex.
This is the reason why some people are scared to do the test, they do not want to find out if they have it or not, there was this promiscuous guy and nothing on a skirt escaped his eyes, suddenly he became sick and was losing weight, he was asked to do Hiv test but refused because he was scared of the result, it was when it became critical that he finally agreed to run a test and it was not positive, it was something different affecting him, that situations changed him for good.
Most time it is not the disease that kills the victim but the stigma that puts them into depression which makes their death faster.

Years ago, A close relative of mine had an issue with her husband, the man started maltreating her and it was later exposed he was into another woman, when she could not take it any longer, she packed her loads and went to her father's house, fortunately for her, her parents accepted her but that does not stop the way people look at her and talk behind her back, she noticed everything but her parent house is her last resort as she had no one else apart from her husband, she bottled it all in and worked hard to take care of her two kids alone.
13 years later, the husband came back begging, he had lost everything and the woman he left her wife for made life miserable for him, that one sent him out of his own house after 6 kids since he lost his job and could not provide anymore, it was then he remembers the first wife but the past could not make her forgive him, she suffered a lot and groomed their children alone, she remembers the days she cried, the days she starved to make sure her kids eat and all these hardened her heart that she doesn't want to have anything to do with the man again, if things did not go bad for him, would he have remembered her.
A lot of people are in a similar situation but they care too much about what others would say that they will stay in the toxic marriage until they lose their life...
The world would be a better place if people could stop the act of stigmatizing others, no one is free of problems, if you can't be nice to them, don't add to their problems or mock them.
