What do you think differentiates successful people from others? What really gives one that edge in any career, skill and endeavor?
I heard the story of man Mr. Akin who rose from nothing to becoming a great salesman all because he was consistent and decided not to be swayed by naysayers. Everybody, even his own friends doubted him, no one believed in his business ideas and dreams, they all said he would amount to nothing.
He had the choice to either listen to their advice and blame the world for his failures or consistently build his business ideas. Mr. Akin dedicated his time in building him consistently. Today, the same friends who laughed at him, ridiculed his ideas and never believed in him now make reference to him and celebrate him.
Shocking but the reality, right?
Most times, we give in too early and lose faith, we throw in the towel and lose sight of what’s ahead but what if we had given that endeavor the hard push it needed? Have you ever asked yourself if what you are currently doing could be done any better? Sometimes, we desire greatness but aren’t ready to put in the work with consistent push and that never give up attitude.
Today, I went out to an old friend’s music store. Mr. Smith who I grew up to know lost his right hands in a ghastly motor accident at a very young age. He was always passionate about music and musical instruments that anyone always knew he would do great pursuing a musical career.
After his hands got amputated, everyone felt all hope was lost for him. I mean, who expects a man with a half right hand to still do music especially in this part of the world where even the “complete” humans find it so hard to go by.
Mr. Smith never gave up on his music dreams. In his words, music always called to him and made him feel different. Getting by with life became tough for him especially now that he had no complete hands. Most white collar jobs won’t even employ him, he can’t even work in a factory as a casual worker because of his hands.
He had normal reason to just give up, shut down and maybe sit at the road side begging for alms but No, according to him, he swore never to be pitied by anyone so he decided to always show up, he decided to find his ways in playing different musical instrument.
Fast forward to date, Mr. Smith owns a music school here in Lagos. Not just that, he is also a professional Sound Engineer. He sells all kinds of musical instrument, rents some out and has staffs working with him.
Today, I was at his Store and I just couldn’t help but marvel at how he still plays piano, drums, lead and bass guitar, local drums, violin and many other instruments without two complete hands. He now teaches Children basic theories of music and makes a living for himself.
He always told me that “whatever I can see with my eyes and conceive in my mind, I can birth forth with the power of consistency.”
The truth is skills and talent is good but never enough. You can be skillful and yet still remain a mediocre if the extra work is not put in because it is never enough to attain greatness.
YOU EITHER SHOW UP DAILY OR SHUT DOWN. WHICH DO YOU PREFER?
His story and many more stories inspire me today to write on the subject CONSISTENCY.
WHAT IS CONSISTENCY?
"Consistency means doing what works. It means sticking with the tried-and-true. Consistency is also about being regular and steady. You have to put in consistent work in order to see results.
Consistency does not mean settling, nor is it sticking with something that’s not working for you/your relationship/your career/etc. It doesn’t mean you must follow old-fashioned ways or ideals that no longer apply in today’s world. text source
The truth is, it doesn’t have to be great before we start pushing towards greatness. No one was born great therefore to achieve that great feat in whatever we so desire, we need to stay on track without shaking. We need to stand tall unwavering whether it is stormy or sunny. That’s the true meaning of consistency.
Consistency is a commitment. It is saying I chose to stay here on track regardless of what the present situation says. It is saying, no matter what comes my way through thick and thin, I will remain strong and keep pushing.
I have been asked severally times what it takes to remain consistent and how to keep standing tall doing what you need to do.
I’ll be sharing few points to note that can aid consistency.
POINTS TO CONSIDER
- Understanding purpose:
Firstly, without understanding the purpose of a thing, we tend to abuse it or lose interest. When we clearly understand the purpose of a thing, we attach meaning and give it life to birth forth.
“Purpose gives anything true meaning”
In relation to Hive, as newbies and existing members of Hive, DO YOU KNOW WHY YOU ARE HERE? HAVE YOU CLEARLY UNDERSTOOD YOUR PURPOSE HERE?
This is a crucial factor to consider.
- Strategic planning:
Sometimes, we are always geared up to remain consistent but it suddenly wears out. This can be also attributed to the fact that we forget to draw strategic plans and paths. I mean, who goes to the war front without a battle plan? That’s more like a death wish.
“It is expedient to always remember to sit down and count the cost.”
Counting the cost means having a clear plan for what needs to be achieved, drawing out routines and putting checks in place.
In relation to Hive, as a newbie and even a long time user, what is your strategic plan? Have you sat down to count the cost and put checks in place? Do you have your Hive goals broken down into bits?
Have a picture of the end in mind and start building towards it.
- Mentorship and association:
No man is an Island. Whatever you want to remain consistent at as people in that field who are professionals at it. Everyone needs shoulders to climb on and lean on too.
Mentorship and association should not be overlooked. If you really want to go far in a short time, you need people with the right knowledge and this is where proper association is key.
Thanks to the Hive platform creator that also the need for association amongst us here and placed much priority on it.
In relation to Hive, you need to have Hive mentors you look up to. I for one, have @starstrings01 who introduced me to Hive, @josediccus who inspires me daily with his growth level, @dreemsteem who is my lovely music coach and friend. I hold these people dearly and I also have amazing friends here and I eagerly want to meet more friends who I can rub minds with and share knowledge.
Final Words
In whatever you do, remember these few points made. Consistency in anything can be achieved only if we put our mind to it and decide to make things work.
To all newbies, Hive is a sweet place to be and it needs your determination to make it work. We can collectively make it work if we choose to.
This is a message to everyone out here almost giving up on Hive, Stay put, keep pushing and re-strategize. It will all make sense soon.
WE ARE NOT GIVING UP NOW; WE ARE STRONGER THAN WE LOOK. WE CHOOSE TO REMAIN CONSISTENT!!
