Hello friends I hope you will fine everyone 💓 💗
Under the direction of Louis van Mauritius, a slave tailor thought to be of Mauritian ancestry, a revolt broke out in the Cape Colony in October 1808. Inspired by news of abolition discussions in Europe and revolutions in Haiti, Louis and a small groupincluding two Irishmenorganized a march on Cape Town to plead for freedom for enslaved people. Louis came to a farm in the Swartland wheat region (Vogelgezang) on October 27 disguised as a Spanish captain and got slaves released from the absentee owner wife. They marched farm to farm the following day, recruiting along the way and increasing their numbers to about 300340. Planning to grab the Amsterdam Battery and turn the guns on the Castle, the group passed more than 30 farms, captured farmers, and headed toward Cape Town. Soldiers under Governor Lord Caledon stopped their advance at Salt River. Within thirtysix hours, colonial troops and cavalry arrested 326 insurgents. Of those apprehended, 47 leaders were prosecuted; among them were Louis, James Hooper, and Abraham van der Kaap. Sixteen got death sentences;ORM five leaders hpg Richard, Louis were hanged. Later commuted eleven death sentences; many more were sent to Robben Island or sent back to compulsory labour under erstwhile masters. rising using the informal Dutch pronoun to signify the reversal of social standing and their request for equalisation. Historians believe it to be the first large scale organised slave uprising in South African history even if the rebellion failed practically. Officially abolishing slavery in South Africa in 1834, the British Empire passed the Slavery Abolition Act.
