Are we any more intelligent or smarter than our predecessors who had to travel miles to the library just to seek knowledge? What are your thoughts?”
We live in days where you can literally get whatever you need with a few clicks on your keyboard and good Internet access as far as information is concerned, from health to finance to education, news, etc.
Information is a powerful tool that makes the possessor powerful, either in a good way or in a bad way. Information is one of the very important reasons for education in order that knowledge could be passed from one generation to the other.
Back in the early days of technology, whoever was in search of information needed to either carry out research on the particular problem or subject that they needed information on. Such research and projects were time-consuming and cost-effective, as the researcher needed to travel most of the time for data collection and other things. Then Google came on board, and life became easier, as a researcher could easily get access to previous work that had been done and build on the existing knowledge.
Artificial intelligence has made it even a lot easier, as you need not stress as much as you would using Google and other related search engines like Bing, as the information is unlimited and exclusive to what you might be looking for, and this has made life a lot easier, especially for me as a student. Apart from watching YouTube videos and learning, one of the ways by which I check my correctness when I study, especially as an agricultural economist, is to simply type my questions on either ChatGPT or Meta AI, and I can check if what I have done is on track or not. There are also times where Ai has saved the day when lectures come to class assuming that students already know certain topics and so they tend to go straight to advance work
But as the saying goes, everything that has an advantage also has its disadvantages. This is so true because speaking from a student's point of view, I have seen students just pass questions to assignments on ChatGPT, and once they get an answer, they just copy and wait till exams to come learn such questions, which hasn't been so helpful.
A lot of students no longer see the need for classes and study due to artificial intelligence; it has gotten so bad that some even employ the services of AI in writing letters of application, which isn't supposed to be.
A man once said, Tough times produce tough people, and tough people produce easy times, but easy times produce lazy people, and lazy people produce hard times. In respect to the above statement, there are predictions that AI will take jobs from many humans in the future, but to avoid this information, we have to continuously and cautiously develop ourselves with the information that is available so we can stay relevant.
