When was the last time you did something for others? When did you last volunteer for something? It could be anything at all. What did you learn from the experience? When next do you plan to do it again?”
When it comes to the issue of volunteering, it is a matter of service to God and humanity.
Volunteering can be very uncomfortable and inconvenient sometimes, but the moment you find joy in what you are doing and you find peace with yourself knowing that you are offering service to humanity, everything begins to fall in place.
As a member of the animal welfare club in my school, I have volunteered to create awareness among people about treating animals nicely and being kind to them. One time we went for a sensitization rally on campus and shared flyers and also talked to students about the importance of treating animals with love and care.
After the program, I felt really good about myself because I was being part of an initiative that is for the greater good of animals around me and in the world at large.
I love pets, especially cats and dogs, and it always makes me sad when I see cats or dogs that are not properly taken care of, and so being part of an organization that is currently creating an awareness as to how these animals should be treated gives me joy and some sense of purpose, being able to channel the love I have for pets for the greater good to make sure both pets and farm animals are given the right treatment.
After the last sensitization walk we had in school in the month of December 2024, our coordinator, who is a lecturer in the College of Animal Science, shared a story of how an ex-student of our school got a job simply because he treated someone's pet right, and it became a source of motivation for me and other members of the organization because even though there are no incentives right now, the skills learned from having to volunteer could be useful in a way in the nearest future.
One of the important things about volunteering is networking, and you know what they say: your network is your net worth. I have had the opportunity of meeting some great people in my life because of volunteering, and I also have access to such people because, for some of them, we are on the same social media platforms where I can learn from their wealth of experience. One of the speakers at a function I attended one time told us how he used all the experiences from volunteering for one project or the other to write his curriculum vitae for a job that needed him to have five years of working experience, and he got the job.
At the moment I look forward to volunteering for projects within school, especially in areas of my call competencies, in order to build myself.
