We are going further and further each time and this is fantastic from the point of view. We are going far towards the farthest skies, and we are also going far in our own fields.

I remember very well when a great technological leap took place in relation to agriculture, which was the arrival of GMOs. The year was 2004 and we would have the first plantation of GMO soybeans in Brazil. Many things went through the minds of the population that at the time depended on television media for information. There was no internet available, print media arrived late to the interior because it was produced in São Paulo, and had to travel to the interior of Brazil.
Some were afraid, because they did not understand what it meant. Others were excited about the improvements that could be achieved using this technology. And soon the price also came into play: would transgenic foods be more expensive? After all, those who were at the forefront of this launch paid a high price because the technology is new, and that's how early access works.
Apparently the high initial cost was offset by the effectiveness of the promises of greater productivity, less propensity for pests, and less illness in general. It seemed like a great deal!
Then the first studies on the impact on health arrived, some suspicions were raised, and everything changed again. An eternal back and forth of discussions and accusations, permeated by the money of those who invested fortunes in this technology as opposed to those who only have their own health to invest.
Prices went down.
Consumption increased.
Even today, people are afraid when they see the evil seal indicating the presence of transgenic components in foods in Brazil.

This T inside a yellow triangle has been the cause of political disputes for twenty years! Ruralists, monoculture farmers, are calling for the brand to be removed. Environmentalists advocate for the permanence of the seeds. Is it a battle of giants? Certainly not.
It is worth remembering that this seal of evil only arose due to the clandestine plantations of transgenic soybeans by the multinational Monsanto, back in 2003. The penalty was imposed for illegal production in Rio Grande do Sul. However, it seems that no one bothered to investigate how the adulterated grains arrived in the country. Apparently there was no criminal investigation.
The technology applied to transgenic seeds brought increased productivity and consequently profits for rural producers and for the holder of the technology. This does not mean that the population benefited. But indirectly, we have an interesting effect to analyze.
While traditional vegetable oils maintained their values, transgenic oils saw a reduction in price, increasing their sales within the limits of interest of the population that is tolerant of the issue.
It didn't take long for the packaging of transgenic oils to be adapted to the predominant color golden yellow, the same color as the mark of evil, so that for the majority of the population, the small T inscribed inside a triangle is ignored. Thus, transgenic oils took over the market leadership even though the population does not trust the technology, as they consume the product partly due to their own ignorance.
This is a partial account of the story I have lived since the launch of transgenics until today, in Brazil.

Me lembro muito bem quando um grande salto tecnológico aconteceu em relação à agricultura, que foi a chegada dos transgênicos. O ano era 2004 e teríamos a primeira plantação de soja transgênica no Brasil. Muitas coisas passaram pela cabeça da população que na época dependia da mídia televisiva para se informar. Não havia internet disponível, a mídia impressa chegava até o interior com atraso pois era produzida em São Paulo, e precisava viajar para o interior do Brasil.
Alguns tiveram medo, por não entender o que significava. Outros ficaram empolgados devido aos melhoramentos que foi possível conseguir usando dessa tecnologia. E logo o preço também entrou na conta: os alimentos transgênicos iriam ser mais caros? Afinal, quem esteve na ponta desse lançamento pagou um alto custo pois a tecnologia é nova, e assim funciona o acesso antecipado.
Aparentemente o custo inicial elevado foi compensado com a efetividade das promessas de maior produtividade, menos propensão para pragas, e menos adoecimento em geral. Parecia um ótimo negócio!
Então chegaram os primeiros estudos de impacto na saúde, algumas suspeitas levantadas, e tudo muda novamente. Um eterno vai e vem de discussões e acusações, permeados pelo dinheiro daqueles que investiram fortunas nessa tecnologia em contraponto daqueles que só tem a investir a própria saúde.
Os preços baixaram.
O consumo aumentou.
Ainda hoje as pessoas tem receio quando percebem o selo maligno que indica a presença de componentes transgênicos em alimentos no Brasil.

Esse T dentro de um triângulo amarelo é causa de disputas políticas por vinte anos! Os ruralistas, agricultores da monocultura, pedem a retirada da marca. Os ambientalistas defendem a permanência. Luta de gigantes? Certamente não.
Vale lembrar que esse selo do mal só surgiu devido à plantações clandestinas de soja transgênica da multinacional Monsanto, ainda no ano de 2003. A penalidade foi imposta para a produção ilegal no Rio Grande do Sul. Porém, ao que parece ninguem se preocupou em investigar como os grãos adulterados chegaram ao país. Aparentemente não houve investigação criminal.
A tecnologia aplicada às sementes transgênicas trouxe aumento de produtividade e consequentemente ganhos para os produtores rurais e para a detentora da tecnologia. Isso não significa que a população foi beneficiada. Mas indiretamente, temos um efeito interessante para analisar.
Enquanto os óleos vegetais tradicionais mantiveram seus valores, o óleos transgênicos perceberam uma redução de preço, aumentando suas vendas dentro do limite de interesse da população que é tolerante ao tema.
Não demorou muito para as embalagens de óleos transgênicos serem adaptadas para a cor predominante amarelo dourado, a mesma cor da marca do mal, de forma que para a maior parcela da população, o pequeno T inscrito dentro de um triângulo é ignorado. Assim, óleos transgênicos assumiram a liderança do mercado mesmo que a população não confie na tecnologia, pois consome o produto em parte pela sua própria ignorância.
Esse é um relato parcial da história que vivi desde o lançamento dos transgênicos até os dias de hoje, no Brasil.
