I attended a private school during my creche, nursery, and primary school days but attended a public school during my high school and university days. To be candid, i enjoyed both experiences to the fullest. It is often believed in Nigeria that private schools are better than public schools. Kindly follow me as i share my view.
From my experience so far, having passed through the four walls of both private and public institutions, i can boldly say that private school is a better choice of institution for basic learning while public schools are better for advance learning. Basic learning in this context refers to the learning stage between creche to high school level. Though based on my evaluations, I'll be attributing 50% to both private and public high schools. Reasons to this will be outlined in the course of this writing.
More emphasis are geared on the effective, cognitive, and psychomotive growth of private school pupils and students as their teachers can easily interact with them and evaluate the students' performance. They are able to concentrate more on the development of each and every pupils/students in a class since they are not much as compared to the population of pupils/students in public schools. But when it comes to an advanced institution of learning (i.e., universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education), public institutions tend to be more proactive than private institutions. They tend to have more lecture resources, lecture theatres, gaming facilities, school laboratories and apparatus needed for the improved learning of the students, but the setback is the fact that most government institutions do go on strike especially when the needs of the public institutions like universities or polytechnics are not meeting up to expectation.
When we move a bit lower to the high school standard in Nigeria, to be precise, we may notice that most teachers in government secondary schools are certified teachers. Before one can be approved to be a teacher in a government school, he/she is expected to have gone through some educational trainings, teaching practice, and must be dully certified nationally to be a teacher and belong to the Nigerian Teachers Association (NTA). He/she is expected to have acquired the National Certificate of Education (known as NCE) or given a double honour in Bachelor's of Science and Education (B.Sc and B.ED) or undergo his/her studies to the post graduate level of education (PGDE). The government ensures that those recruited into the public service institutions are not high school graduates but graduates of advanced learning with a great teaching experience. This gives the government teachers an edge over many private school teachers both in the federal and state level, unlike some private proprietors who would rather prefer to employ some intellectual high school graduates to underpay them.
So, going through my statements, you should be able to see that the private school is very great for basic students. This is the reason why most private school students seem to be more brilliant and smarter at their basic level of education, but when it comes to an advanced level of learning, the public institution seems to be a better choice than private. During this stage, socialization is very paramount. You're able to meet people from diverse works of life and interact with them. This will as well, help build your self-esteem. Beside this, public advanced institutions of learning are more loaded with resources than private institutions I've seen so far. Don't get intoxicated by the idea that private universities are expensive and by this they give wuality education. The reason for them being expensive is for the fact that the school solely depends on the students' fees and charges to grow their business. So more financial burden is placed on their students as a result.
Public advanced institutions are far better and help one to manage money while gaining access to quality education. Today, Youtube is a better support for studies as well. So this has made life and learning easier than ever. So, from my perspective, I'll say private is better than public school since private is known to give a better basic education for children from their creche to high school level. A house without a solid foundation will definitely crumble some day.
I hope you will agree with me based on the points I've made so far. This is my entry to the week 62 episode 1 of the weekly contents.
