The oldest person I knew so closely was my maternal grandmum. It's quite unfortunate she is late but there were many lessons i learnt feom her while she was alive.
She was more like a friend, mother and grandmother to me during her lifetime. I spent most of my childhood moments living with her. She trained me so well to be diligent, and respectful and to remember the son of whom I am. Eversince, her words of advices had been my watch word.
There were many things I learnt from her during her lifetime and these include;
Honesty: She taught me to be truthful no matter the level of confrontation I face in life. I was made to know that honesty is a great virtue every man should possess. During her lifetime I noticed she hardly lies. Her Yes is definitely a Yes and vice versa.
Charity: She thought me to love and care for people, especially my neighbours. I was made to know that nothing in life is permanent except time and also made to understand that whatever you've gotten is not for you alone. That's why a farmer is not expected to eat his seeds because sooner or later he will be left with nothing to plant and harvest during the rainy day. She made me understand the importance of giving to the poor. She gives most of her money and possible properties to charity. Yearly she celebrates her birthday with the less privileged people and at orphanages. I really can't just imagine her high level of kind-heartedness.
Time factor: My grandmum was a disciplinarian and never jokes with time. Whenever she fixes an appointment with someone she ensures she is already at the venue of the appointment 30 minutes before the said time. She dares not ask you to see her by 8.30 am and you get there by 8.45 am. She will be mad at you at that very time you get there. Since I've understood her personality, I dare not waste her time. Her commitment to time was mind-blowing and worthy of emulation.
Daily Devotion: My grandmum is always consistent and will never miss a day without observing her daily prayers and devotions. It has become a routine that must be carried out daily and this must be done before breakfast. She prays 6times a day and has never missed a streak for once. That is a great deal of commitment and self-discipline.
Multitasking: My grandmum was a great multitasker. She could carry out more than two routines at once. This has been one of her attributes I've learnt over time, and it's an awesome lesson for me and many others.
Education: One other aspect I so much appreciate about my grandmum is her love for education. She appreciates the worth of being educated. This is the more reason she hustled hard to ensure her children had a solid educational background.
She was indeed, a definition of a true mother to her children which include my mum. She was so caring, down to earth, a disciplinarian, well cultured and organised. Though she is late but her good words will remain valuable as gold in me. My late grandmum died at age 98 mid last year. She is always remembered by her families, friends and well wishers.
