I come from a family that consists of the parents, children, uncles and aunties, yes I know everyone comes from that kind of family but mine was a little bit different, normally my immediate family is a large one, my mum gave birth to seven children, four boys and three girls, then my dad had extra two boys outside marriage, which made it nine children, although the two boys didn’t live with us at the beginning, but my uncles and aunties was, it was a very large family while I was growing up, infact to the extent that my dad’s younger sister had issues with her husband then, she started living with us with her two children, the three bedroom apartment was tight, some people would sleep in sitting room, on somedays my younger sister and I would relocate to my mothers room once my dad travels for work.
The perks of living having such a large is that, its always interesting and sometimes crazy too, we gist alot, we always have each others back outside the home but inside the home there is always commotion though, Lol. Infact in such a home don’t keep food and expect to come back to meet that food where you placed it, my brothers would drink deliberately drink your drink and fill the can up with water, they would eat your food and fill the plate with garri and cover it just the way you left, it was always fun with them, infact then I didn’t do any house chores, my dad would never allow my younger sister and I do any house work, our work was just to bath, eat, go to school, play and sleep.
The disadvantage of having such family was that, the main children of the house would never be comfortable, just because we don’t want to direspect any uncle or aunty we let them have the bed, apart from that, there were mostly disagreements too and sometimes it led to fights, to any extent that the last relation that came to stay with wanted to have a sexual relationship with me and he also steals, a pastor’s son for that matter.
Mind you, my immediate family didn’t end there, my dad actually had another girl child along the line, this one brought alot of commotion in the house before my dad passed, this is to the point that I might even walk pass the little girl in this present time and I won’t even recognize her because I only saw her once during my dad’s burial, personally to me If I had the choice of choosing I would prefer a smaller family to avoid less drama and stress.
And also when I start having my own family, whether money is an issue or not, I would always have a small family, it makes the parents know each and everyone of the their children very well, plus I wouldn’t want my children to be uncomfortable in their own house just the way I wasn’t comfortable.
