"it was right here when I left" Maria thought as rummaged through the whole room looking for her diamond ring. Darren had just proposed a few days ago. How is she going to explain it to Darren that she can't find the ring? Maria stays alone in her little self contain apartment, she has no roommates and she's the only one with the keys to the apartment.
Maria had left the ring in the house in order not to attract unnecessary attention to herself through the ring, but now the thing she feared and wanted to avoid has happened to her and she didn't know what to do. Maria knew she had to either find the ring, or get a new one, if not, she wasn't sure if Darren would forgive her.
After a lot of thought, Maria decided to find the ring as she wasn't financially buoyant enough to get a new one. Besides the ring has been a family antique in Darren's family and they'd easily find out if she got a new one. The first thing Maria did was to call the people who had a good knowledge of the house she's staying, people who have been there several times and knows how she operates and where she keeps her things.
After her round of calls, she was still left in a confused state as none of her friends or family members visited her place that day. And the thief had left no clue whatsoever for Maria to follow, everything seemed to be in place except the ring. So she started looking for clues no matter how small. "where would anyone be able to steal the ring without entering the house?" Maria thought as she walked towards the table where the ring was supposed to be, and she realized that the table was just about 2 feet from the window.
That was when she realized that the window was open, with a little opening in her window net, just enough for a finger or little stick to pass through. Immediately she hurried to her backyard to check for footprints. The footprints she saw looked like a lady's own, roughly size 39. That was when her phone rang and it was her brother's girlfriend calling
"hey, how are you?" Maria said as she picked the call
"hey, I'm good... You?" the voice on the other side replied
"I'm good." Maria answered
"are you free? I wanted to talk to you about something" the lady queried
"sure. Where do I meet you?"
"I'll text you" the lady said as she dropped the call.
Maria knew there was something wrong in her brother's relationship, because that's the only times his girlfriend calls her. A few minutes later Maria went off to see her brother's girlfriend at the stipulated restaurant. After talking for some while, Maria noticed that she was roughly size 39. As they were leaving she noticed that the prints from her shoe matched the same one she had seen at her backyard, but she ignored it.
On getting to her brother's place, Maria found her brother in a foul state, he was obviously still angry with his girlfriend. So Maria sat them both down to talk to them, that was when her brother opened up that his girlfriend is a chronic smoker, and he has tried numerous times to make her stop but to no avail.
He narrated how she left the house with her lighter a few hours ago to go smoke after they had quarreled about it.
"I even thought she was coming to you, not knowing that you were not at home and she had gone off to smoke again" Maria's brother ranted.
"I did not smoke, I went to Maria's place but she wasn't there" his girlfriend snapped back.
Another thing touched Maria that the little hole in her net looked like it was burnt with fire. She wears size 39, has the same footprints as the one she saw at her backyard and went there with a lighter. Maria unable to control her emotions burst out
"where is my ring"* Maria blurted out
"what ring?" her brother querried
"she stole my ring" Maria replied
"I don't know what you're talking about" her brother's girlfriend replied obviously shaking
"you wear size 39, you have the same footprints as the one I noticed by my window, I bet you burned my net with your lighter and made away with my ring." Maria narrated
"now where's my ring before I call the police" she concluded sounding furious.
Scared for her life, her brother's girlfriend rushed inside and brought the ring and apologized to Maria and her brother, but Maria was too shocked to know what to do, so she just picked her ring and left. She'll make a decision when she's calm and can think clearly.
