Last Monday I went to a fellowship in my church and our leader was bitterly talking about how the rate of broken homes is becoming alarming. We actually prayed about it and hoped that things become better.
But I came home wondering how things became like this. In this age, we have everything it takes to make our marriage last but we are having the reverse. Our predecessors on the other hand didn't. In fact, some of them have little knowledge about marriage and how to care for their partners but the record of divorce in their day was less.
Different things came to my mind and seriously, I am beginning to wonder if we truly know what love is in this generation. We may know it by head knowledge but we don't have the practical knowledge.
I still believe that love conquers everything and by it alone, everything else in the world can be put in the right place. But with the way things are going, my faith in love is wavering.
They told us that love doesn't die and it endures all things but that is no longer the case. Recently, I have been tempted to ask married people what is still keeping them in marriage. Is it love, is it the fear of the oaths they took, or is it for the children between them?
I am worried about these things because I have seen people who claimed they loved each other so much get married and fight every day or get divorced.
Going by what I know to be the characteristics of love, such shouldn't happen but unfortunately here it is.
With all these things happening in marriages, I think prenuptial agreement is not bad. Let the couple take oaths and sign agreements that will continually be on their minds as they go through their marital journey so that one of them doesn't get cheated and so that they don't go off course.
The hearts of people can be so wicked, some people can claim to love someone and even marry them only for what those persons have. Their targets are something else, once they are legally joined, they can even harm them just to take possession of their riches.
Some men can marry a lady, promise her love, and also promise to be with her alone but as soon as she enters their home, they will go ahead and get a second wife. Signing agreements can settle things like these too.
There are cases where people marry and they deny it when they are with someone they have affection for. Signing those agreements and exchanging vows publicly can reduce things like that. There are also situations where those certificates can be used to get people good opportunities.
Love is a beautiful thing and it is magical but it is not enough. We also need legal agreements to support it as we journey into marriages.
But don't get me wrong, a prenuptial agreement isn't a savior in marriage, in fact, it can't keep a home. Some people don't abide by laws and don't honor their words, they can sign an agreement and break them the next day. The only thing that can keep a home is true love.
Those agreements, those vows are like additives to help us to commit to what we are going into and also not to take advantage of the other person.
But it will take only a couple who are God-fearing and law-abiding to keep to those vows.
