I have heard a lot of people say terrible things like, “We wasted our money going to school or registering for a course.” It makes me wonder if those people have reasoned before saying those things.
There is one popular saying that I love so much that has become a cliche in our day: “No knowledge is waste.” I know a lot of people casualize it, but the saying is full of truth.
Even if you don't get what you expected from something you learned, the knowledge would benefit you in another way. Knowledge doesn't go in vain.
Being educated has brought so much light into our world. Many years ago, people hated each other for reasons known to them.
There was segregation among us; we called ourselves funny names to mark that division, but when education came, a lot of people realized it was wrong and stopped. It brought hope and unity.
Knowing how to read, write, and speak English has helped us learn about various cultures and understand that humans are not the same. It has helped us in communication and how to understand and accept each other.
And through morals, societal ethics, laws, and so on that we were taught, we respect each other and know our boundaries.
Naturally, even without education, a lot of people already know good and bad, but education gives it more light.
I was interacting with some friends yesterday about relationships. They already know some things about relationships, but it was basic. When I unveiled certain things to them, most of them were astonished.
How did I know those things? I learned from books and experience. How were books written? Through the aid of education.
We put so many expectations on education that we don't even realize some of the big impacts it has been making in our lives silently.
Can Being Learned Make Anyone Good?
My answer is “Yes,” but the choice lies in the hands of the person who acquired the knowledge.
Being learned has the potency to transform lives and make people better, but only those who decide to embrace what they have learned and put it into practice enjoy it. It is one thing to be informed; it is another to use the information.
Again, it depends on the hearts of people as well. Some people naturally want to be bad; they can have all the knowledge they need. Be educated, know what is good and what is evil, know morals, and know how feeble and vulnerable people are, yet choose to be bad.
Being learned only gives you an edge to be good, but it doesn't have the power to make anyone good or bad without the person deciding to embrace it.
Take, for instance, in secondary schools, different subjects are taught, each of them to make us well-rounded. Apart from all subjects that impact academic knowledge, we are also taught Religious Knowledge and Civic Education.
These subjects teach morals and how to become good citizens. At the end of the day, everyone who learns them gets informed, knows what is good and what is evil, how to contribute positively to their communities, and be good citizens.
That consciousness will always be registered in our hearts. Whenever you are about to do the opposite, something in you will signal to you that you are about to do something wrong.
Sometimes, you will even remember what you have learned vividly, at that point, it would be left for you to choose which path to take.
Left for me, education, if well delivered, always does its job; most people become whatever they are out of choice, not out of ignorance.
